I am new to tractor mechanics, So I am wondering about how difficult it is to repair or replace the govenor on my TO-20. From the looks of it (since I have no manual) it seems as if you have to pull the front axle off to access the timing cover. And this seems as if it may quite a chore. Is this one of those times when I need to take it to a real mechanic?

Allen, Why do you think there is a problem with your governor? Assuming you do have such a problem, having the shop manual, a floor jack, a gear puller, and the right wrenches, I don't believe it takes a really skilled mechanic to get to the governor mechanism. Of course if the problem is in the governor linkage, you don't have to do all of this.

You really need to get a shop manual and a parts manual (the orginal factory reproductions are the best, in my opinion), if for no other reason than to help you decide whether you can handle a specific job, or because of special tool requirements, you ought to pay someone else to do them. You can also get a lot of great advice right here in this forum from a bunch of folks that have "been there, done that" on these old Fergusons. My personal opinion is there is very little normal repair work that can't be done by a person forearmed with a shop & parts manual and some minor mechanical skills, a willingness to try, and the good sense to ask for help on this forum when they're not quite sure about something.
Hope this helps.

Why do you want to access the governor itself ? This is a very simple device and unless the weights have detached the problem is more likeley to be in the linkage adjustment or adjustment of the bumper spring. See previous post about governor bumper spring.

Good Luck

This is one of those things you either know how to do by heart or must have a shop manual. I suggest visiting a MF dealer to buy owners and shop manuals; aftermarket manuals do not match the mfgrs manuals exactly. The MF governor system is quite good and very exacting to adjust or repair. You may obtain some good advice from Big Dean's website.
