I just purchased a t020. It is my first tractor and I could use some help. Am I correct that to change the oil I must remove the bolt underneath the front of the tractor that keeps a large circular devise attached to the machine. When I do this I will find the oil filter. Am I right so far? Should I use 30 or 40 weight oil? About how much oil does that tractor take? How difficult will it be for me to secure a new oil filter. About how often should I change the oil. Any help that I can get will really be appreciated.
Bill

I would like to thank Jeff and Phil for their quick response. I do have a question, however was there a time when the T020 did not have an oil filter?

I contacted the original owner of my tractor. He became rather upset at the design of filter. As a result, he removed the filter, welded it shut and has been using it for the past 10 years. he changes the oil but not the filter since it no longer exists. OK what do I do now?

Yikes!!!

What did he actually weld up? The cover plate? Or something else?

I will atttempt to describe what he did or the way that he explained it to me. On the belly of the tractor there is the circular plate. There should be two bolt heads on this plate. One allows you to drain the oil which I did and replaced it with 30 weight non-detergent oil which is what he suggested. The second bolt which would be in front of the oil chage bolt is not longer there, he seems to have cut the top off and welded it closed. I can change the oil but the filter is not there. It has been like this for years.

No.

My TE20 predates the intro of the TO20 line. Infact it was shipped over here (US) while Harry was getting his Detroit TO-20 plant going. It has the same Cont. Z129 engine as the TO-20's.

You remenided me to change my oil. The filter is $6.88 at NAPA now. The number is 1107 and they can look it up under Massey Ferguson TO20 model.

The oil filter gasket is available from MF, part # 1750269M1 price here is $2.57 US

Welcome Bill.

Glad you have found our little band. Phil is correct in that everyone has a different answer. And I will respectfully give my opinion. Some of which agrees and some does not agree with Phil.

1st. Yes you have found the oil pan, the round thing under the engine. Howevever from your discription, do not first remove the big round cover. Open the plug that sits at an angle on the side of this cover. That is the oil drain. Once the oil is drained out then the round cover may be removed to replace the filter. Note the cover may be "glued" on with silicone. Gently pry it off. The filter is a canaster type and is available from NAPA. Although call first as it may take a day or two to get it in. It is PN: 1107 - this is a WIC filter so if you have a auto part store that sells wic's then you can go there.
Cost here was $6.59

Also, you will want to change the oil cover seal if yours is old/missing. A Massy-ferg dealer also sells the filter and seal as a kit. I do not know the PN's but they should. Some one said that the oil filter seal was about $2.50. I had a kit price of about $12.00 when I called.

You can find your nearest MF dealer at www.agcocorp.com and do a dealer search for your continent. I presume North America.

I use straight 30wt. oil. Some will say it must be non-detergent. The choice is yours.

The tractor will take 6 quarts with a filter change. The book says change the oil every 50 hours of operation.... i.e. once a year if all you do is mow and garden prep/clean-up.

The manuals are well worth getting. The Operaters manual is around $10.00 and the service manual is around $13.00. Although a lot of internet places will want to charge $30.00 or more each. These are good to get at your massey dealer. Post again if you need help finding manuals.

So what year is your TO? SN? etc.

Jeff

p.s. if you plan on mowing make sure you have a ORC. write if you do not know what an ORC is.

Filter is inside the oil pan. By your description, I'm guessing you have found it... although I'm not certain. Originally the manuals called for 30 wt. oil in above freezing situations. Lots of people now use multiweight oils, however. If yours uses oil or has low oil pressure, you could go to a heavier oil, like 40 wt., but otherwise that is normally not done except for the multiweights. The 15-40 multiweight is favored by many, but you can get a different answer from almost everyone you ask. Just use good quality oil. If you are farming with it, you will need to look at the hours of use and determine changes, but for most of us hobby users, I think once a year is enough unless you are using it really hard. Some people change twice a year. You should get a manual.
