1955 Ferguson TO-35 (PTO Question)

I have a 1955 Ferguson TO-35, On the PTO lever, up is engine PTO, down is ground PTO. Does this tractor have a 2 stage clutch? Should the PTO stop when you depress the clutch fully?

Well.... maybe! To both questions!

The two stage clutch has a pronounced increase in pedal pressure about halfway down, and the serial number (if still there) will have S(X)M letters before the 5 or 6 numbers - the M indicates a dual clutch. If the third letter is F, it's a single stage.

Will it stop? If the three stop capscrews on the pressure plate (accessible inside the bottom of the bell housing) are adjusted to .055 - .060, and the pedal free play about 1/2", it normally will. It's common that they go adrift, and the PTO grinds putting it into engine drive.

not wanting to start an argument but; early TO-35's did not have letter designations included in the serial number. if the tractor has a full set of gauges and a tractormeter it is a delux with 2 stage clutch. (oil, water, amp gauges)

Charles, put the pto in engine position. With the clutch fully depressed and the trans. in gear slowly release the clutch. If the pto starts turning before the tractor moves it is a two stage clutch. If the pto and tractor both move at the same pedal position it is a single clutch. Hope this helps.

thanks jack, cosmo, the adrift sounds right in this case, i know the release levers are not adjusted even, can feel them pulsing in the clutchpedal thanks again , charles
