Morning Everyone
A freind of mine who does not have a computer has asked me to post a question. He is in the middle of overhauling an old TEA-2085 When he opened up the front of the tractor ( Timing Chain ) all the gears and chain were gone. Likely the tractor was being parted out. He has ordered all new gears and chain. The problem is this. He has received 2 top gears and they both dont fit. The center of the gear fits onto the camshaft but only one of the 2 mounting bolts will line up. He sent them both back, now he has a new one and the 2 mounting bolt holes will line up fine, but the center hole is a hair to small to mount on the camshaft properly. Question is this, can he machine out the center hole to fit onto the camshaft? He only has to make the hole a wee bit bigger Will it affect the way the tracot works when its all reasembled? Thanks in advance of any responses,,, Barry

Hi Barry,
They do need to be a very close fit. He may be able to warm up the gear in the oven, and then slide it on, if it is only a tiny bit too small. If he does it while it's cold outside of course that will help too.
If that isn't enough to do it then I would suggest honing the inside of the hole if there isn't a keyway (can't recall).
Best of luck to him,
Jim

I forgot when I wrote that, that the two gears and chain have to go on all at once so it could be a bit more tricky than it sounds. (Since there is no tensioner, the chain has very little slack so you can't put it on after the gears are in place.)

Engineering tolerances now are several orders of magnitude smaller and tighter than they were when our tractors were made - so often you will find that replacement parts don't quite fit right the first time.

I would not expect any problems from what you have described if you bore out the centre hole a tad - but do NOT allow it to become a sloppy fit on the camshaft - a sliding fit would be best so that you can be sure it runs true to the centreline of the cam as does not exhibit any runout.

Doing this should not have any effect on the way the tractor works when it is all reassembled, if the job is done properly and carefully (as if any of us would do it any other way!!!).

HTH a bit
