Hydraulic pressure relief valve

I said I would go and check on my two pumps and then forgot to do it. But yesterday I was installing one and found out:
a) The newer pump has a bolt head exactly where the pressure relief valve goes, so you could get the valve and install it and use it with your older lift cover. When you take it out you will see that it has a spring and poppet valve on the end, but the pressure relief valve has that as well.
b) When I tried installing the newer pump in my older differential case, it didn't fit because the distance between the two "cylinder heads" on the pump is slightly narrower, and that space will not accommodate the width of the flange around the pto shaft coming out of the transmission. I suppose it might have been possible to grind off that flange a bit on either side, if I had still had access, but now the whole rear end is together so I used the older pump. (This all shouldn't affect you I think since you are using the same pump that came out, right?)
c) I forgot about this before but the linkage coming down from the top cover was changed on the later lift covers, because the pinion sits farther forward. You should use the linkage that came from your broken lift cover.
I hope this message is not too late....
Regards,
Jim W
