My TE-20 runs really well for the first 10-15 minutes then shuts down, when I let it cool for 5-10 minutes it goes again. I have replaced the resistor, plugs, leads, points, coil and have put a kit through the carb.I have also made sure that the fuel is not vaporising in the line. I'm running out of ideas of what to do.

It may help to check your new coil - is it 6Volt or 12volt. if 12 volt does it have internal or need external resistor. If you a 6 volt coil and your tractor is 12 volt you must have a resistor in the line. Most 6 volt tractors also have a resistor in the line to the coil. Sometimes these resistors go bad.

Make sure your fuel tank vent isn't clogged and make sure that all your fuel filters are not clogged. Start by opening the plug in the bottom of the carb. If gas comes out like a cow peeing on a flat rock you have a good fuel delivery system.

If not, check the "secret filter" in the fuel supply elbow at the carb. If that's clean, check the filter in the sediment bowl. If your still not getting adequate fuel, take the sediment bowl of the tank 'cuz there's a screen over the fuel inlet tubes. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, I have cleaned both screens and the jets in the carb there is plenty of fuel getting through. Any other tips?

When you repaced the points did you replace the condensor? Do you have a volt meter? With the key on and the points closed, you should have battery voltage to the (-) side of the coil with a six volt system. Don't forget to check across the key switch. They fail also.If you have a 12V system, you should have battery voltage across the key to the battery side of the ballast resistor, 4-5 volts at the (+) side of the coil. Check your spark by grounding the coil secondary output wire ( the big one that goes to the distributor cap center) against the block. You should see a big blue spark holding it a quarter of an inch away from the block and cranking over the engine. If you don't you have a problem in the ignition system. Make sure the connections are all bright clean and tight.Run the engine til it quits and then run these tests again. Let us know what you find.

Well, you hit em all except the condenser mentioned by Geo (which usually fail hard for me if they fail)

and

Fuel starvation. Take the air cleaner off so you have access to the carb air intake. Next time it does it quickly squirt some starting fluid in there and hit the starter (assuming it has already died, or,if it's still running, does it come back on?) If either is true, get yourself a vented cap for your fuel tank or see next paragraph.

How did you determine that you weren't boiling fuel in the fuel inlet line, or that your filter/strainer wasn't clogged?

This may seem like a strange question but is the condenser in the distributor next to the points? If not where is it? The way I could tell that the fuel was not boiling was that I have a leak in my fuel line since replacing the carb, I felt the fuel on my fingers and it wasn't even warm. I really appreciaite your help it was very nice of you to take the time to respond.

I enjoy seeing people get out of problems with their old iron. That's why I visit.

Starting out, there was no one to help me and I couldn't afford a mechanic. It was a lonely feeling. Thanks for your comments.

The condencer IS adjacent to the points. It's only purpose is to keep the points from arcing every time they switch. You can run for a short period without it for troubleshooting purposes but any lengthy time will shorten your point life....pitting.

If you have a leaking fuel line, tank vacuum may not be your problem. You may have a clogged inlet filter. Just think about a cannister with 2 hoses on it, a small fill and a large outlet. The cannister holds a certain amount of fuel. When fuel is consumed, the small inlet attempts to refill it but it can't fast enough so when what's in the cannister and the little bit that dribbled in are used up, the engine starves. It stops and the meager refill process refills the cannister over 10 to 20 min and the cycle repeats.

If you have not replaced the condenser in the distributor, I would try that also. These can cause this exact problem....the other thing I would have suggested is the coil but you replaced that.

Check your gap on the points also, maybe close them down just a bit to see if that solves the problem...if so of course you should reset th timing.

Thank you very much for the advise, what I was calling the resistor is the condensor. I will close the gap down and see if that fixes my propblems. Once again thank you for your time.
