I have a 1959 Harry Ferguson TO-30. Serial number TO 3551. It is a great tractor and I use it to mow and till with. The problem tilling is no low transfer so I have to go over a surface several times. Can a low transfer be put on this tractor? If so, how much trouble will it be. Thanks for any help.

Mark,

If your serial number is correct (TO 3551) then that would corespond to a 1949 TO-20. A secondary way to check is to id the engine model. There is a cast number on the left side near the bottom centered front to back. A -20 is a Z120 engine while the -30 has a Z129 engine.

Now to your question. You are correct in your observation that the gearing is to fast for a good tilling job. Unfortuantly these tractors were not designed with that slow af a gearing.

I know of no way to put on a lower gear to slow it down. Sorry for the negative news.

Jeff

The number on the engine is Z129 A600. Since the other serial number is for a 49 does this mean something is not original? Because I thought the TO-30 did not come out until 53?

I've re-read your post, and I believe you are saying the first pass with the tiller attachment will not give you a finished product -- similar to a commercial for those well-known tillers on TV... My experience, trying to push up dirt between rocks here in WV, is the first pass only serves to break up the surface and its multiple passes that produce that photo-quality seed bed. If you are saying the Fergie has no "down" pressure on the hydraulics, my TO30 is the same way. Oh, are you sure its a TO30? Maybe you skipped a serial number digit or the year was wrong.

The number on my engine is Z129 A600. So, I guess that means it is a TO-30. When I use my neighbors Ford tractor with the creeper geer my tiller turns grass to plantable dirt in one pass. But, the furgie doesn't go slow enough for the tiller to chew up the dirt as good.
