Ferguson TED restoration project

I would like to restore a Ferguson TED tractor.

We managed to start the tractor yesterday. It runs okay, but the owner said that I will have to go the engine up (new rings, etc.). The lift would not work which the owner said was strange because it always used to work. The last time the tractor was started was 1 year ago.

I phoned our local South African agents and was told that I am wasting my time the tractor has been discontinued 20 years ago. I won't let this get me down though.

1) Where can I get the service and parts manual for the tractor? (I live in South Africa).

2) What spares can I get and what spares can I not get ?

Thanks in advance for you reply and advice.

Leslie

Try www.vapormatic.com for parts, they do most things for the fergies. MF do not strictly speaking operate in South Africa, they use in importer who I can't remember the name of, who also import Claas kit.

Did you remember to engage the PTO before trying the hydraulics, it has to be engaged and catches me out sometimes if I've not used one for a while... FOFH are a great source of information and literature, post any questions on this board.

Leslie,
Don't be discouraged by negative attitudes by dealers - it's all too common these days. Most want to sell you a new multi-thousand dollar tractor, not find old parts for enthusiasts like us, there are exceptions though. When you say 'local agent' do you mean Massey Ferguson agent? He should be able to get you most parts from the factory - MF have just launched a big sales drive on parts for older tractors like the TED. That's of course if he can be bothered.
Go to www.fofh.u-net.com that's the Friends of Ferguson Heritage website,I'm sure they have a branch in South Africa. You'll get your manuals and parts catalogues from them. If you can't obtain parts or need advice - I've restored several Fergis - just e-mail me, I'll do my best to help. Good luck,
Regards,
Peter.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your advise. The people I phoned was a company called "Heads tractors". They're supposed to be an agent for MF, and yes, they were really not interested in helping me.

I've looked at several web sites on the internet and it appears that they don't export outside of their continent, which I suppose I can understand because I'm sure that there are many people that are interested in restoring these machines.

I'll have a look at the address you mentioned and I'd like to take you up on your offer of helping with advise. I'm reluctant on relying on the local's advice. This is an old machine and will need to be serviced strictly according to the procedures.

Leslie, I forgot that this board doesn't show e-mail addresses anymore - mine is vintagetractor@hotmail.com. mail me anytime if you need any help. Incidentally, vapormatic are wholesalers, you'll need to find a retailer who stocks their parts, same with Sparex - e-mail me with your postal address and I'll send you their TE20 catalogue.
Regards,
Peter.
