I was back in Iowa last week and learned that the annual plow day sponsored by the Western Iowa Antique Tractor and Engine Club was going to be held Saturday 4/17 near my hometown of Odebolt. I got up the nerve, hooked up the Ferguson 2-14 plow and drove the TO-35 out there, and since I had never really plowed before I didn't know what to expect. Amid a sea of mostly green and some red and orange, the little grey Fergie looked a bit out of place. But after some advice and a couple of rounds, the plow cleaned up some and did a pretty good job. Lots of fun!!

Hi Mike it looks a wee bit dusty compaired to ploughing in the UK my last few outings the rain was horizontal most of the day !!!!! ! O to plough in the dry . Did the soil hold together and turn over well using a 14 inch plough or did it break up ?? What depth were you ploughing at ? Sorry so many questions .

Jim - Good to hear from you! Yes it was pretty dusty and windy (30+ mph) that day - quite different than your soggy outings. The ground was chopped corn stalks and most of the way the dirt seemed a bit crumbly. There were a couple lower areas where it was wetter. Since this was really my first time plowing, I was not sure what I was doing. Didn't think to check the depth with the spanner, just tried to stay the same as the guy I was following - I'd guess about 6". After I adjusted the coulters and the top link it seemed to do a pretty good job turning over the ground. I have a 2-16 Ferguson plow that my grandfather used more than the 2-14, but it's way in the back of the shed and needs a lot of cleaning up, but I'd like to try it sometime, too. Mike

Hi Mike looks like our weather is just picking up temp up into double figures Centigrade now during the day and no rain for about a week . Barley and Oats all in and potatos planted aswell so ploughings finished We never had a double or 2 furrow version of the 16 inch and only a few 14 inch 2 furrow ploughs the 12 was alittle more common but by far the 10 2 and 3 furrow was our popular plough . All 14 inch ones i have seen have been Ford Ferguson ie (Sherman) ploughs not Ferguson ones

Jim - Glad to hear your weather has improved! Your comments on the plows over there are interesting. It seems the 2-14 Ferguson (also Dearborn) was fairly popular here, but haven't seen many if any 2-16's besides mine, which, if you're interested is a 2-16C-AO-28 model. Someday I hope to get it cleaned up and give it a try, too. Mike

Mike,

Looks like a lot of fun. I too have never plowed. Sounds strange for an Iowa farm boy doesn't it. By the time I was working the Fergusons in the early 1960's there wasn't much plowing going on. I'd like to try my TE-20 or TO-30 and 2 bottom plow out someday. Maybe I'll go to the West IA plow day next year?

Don

Looks like fun to me! I grew up in Iowa farming 10 acres with a TE20 and spent many hours plowing. Once you get the right speed and depth you can feel the plow turning over the soil just right. Yes a clean plow makes a big difference. I used to earn extra money plowing the neighbors garden spots.

As they would say in Australia, Mike, "Good on ya, Mate!" Glad you could get your plow into the soil and get some practice.

As a kid, I plowed as much as 150 acres each summer, mostly with a Ford-Ferguson, Ford 8N, or occassionally with a Farmall M. One time I got to use a neighbor's Ferguson disc plow.

Paul
