I am trying to get my grandfathers old to-30 running and not having much luck. It sat for about three years, but now that he hassed passed away I know it would mean alot to him to keep it going. I have done all the simmple maint. things that I can think of(plugs, wires, points, belts, hoses, dist. cap) but cannot get it fired up. It turns over fine (has 8volt in) but just will not fire. Thought maybe you ferguson pros on here would have some Ideas, Im just a mechanically challenged carpenter that does not know much about tractors. Also He has the bat. hooked up with the ground to the startr, and the pos. to the frame is this right? Any pointers at all would really be appreciated. I know my grandmother would love to hear that old tractor fire up again. thnks ANDY

thank alot for the great advice guys. Those definatly seem like some good starting points for me. I did drain all the old gas and put new in and I also sprayed the carb w/carb cleaner. Did not really get crazy cleaning the carb so maybe I should redo that.

I am from Columbia Co. How about u guys

There are three thing to check.

Fuel, air, and spark.

As Justin said it sounds like you've taken care of the spark, only thing left is to check to see if you are actually getting spark, an in like tester is cheep. This is a good test because you can have asituation where the engine will turn but the plugs are grounded and have no spark. i.e. bad key switch.

Next is air: clean the oil bath air filter and replace the oil. Check that the air lines are good.

Last is fuel: (this is where I think you have to focus next.) Did you turn the fuel on? Always the first question. This is done at the glass fuel bowl filter. Two full turns. If that is not it... I would.

Clean the carborator. Remove the carborator and use a carb cleaner. After cleaning blow out the passages with air. Clean the Fuel bowl: easily removes and check the screen. Replace if gasket or screen is worn out ($3 at TSC) Also examine the Gas tank. Take a flashlight and look inside. Is there lots of rust and other floaties. If so take it off and clean it per the post below by Barry from onterio. If not make sure there is enough fuel in it. You may laugh but I just got the price of a MF65 knocked down $1000 because it would not start. Problem..... they put fresh fuel was in the tank but not enough to cover the top of the fuel bowl tap pipe. These stick up into the tank about 1" to keep from sucking in the heavy contamination particles. And as was said... drain all old fuel and put in freash.

Yes if it is an origional 6V system it will be oppisite to your car.

Good luck, you'll get it. lots of help is available. What part of PA do you live in?

Jeff

Looks like you worked on the spark side a lot, what about fuel? If its been sitting, make sure you empty out all of the old fuel in the tank. Take out the sediment bowl/petcock assembly and clean it out. Blow out the fuel lines. You might need to take the carb off and clean it up or rebuild it. There might be a screen in the fuel line leading to the carb, clean that too. If the tank is really rusted, clean it out. Put it all back together and add fresh fuel. Hope this helps.
