What is the best way to remove the retainer so that I can replace the outside seal. Has anyone ever pressed the retainer off or is it mandatory to split the retainer (by whatever means) to get it off and then replace the retainer?

The retainer is sacrificial and will need to be cut off. If you have a press you can then press the bearing housing off with the bearing. I did one once without a press by cutting the bearing out with the gas axe and replacing it afterwards (it was worn anyway so I did not mind doing this). To fit the new retainer, heat it to red hot and it will drop on easily.
