Just bought myself a 1952 Ferguson T030, by serial number 103063. Allegedly one owner who used the Freeman loader to clean out barn. Although the machine is mechanically sound but for a few things (gas tank dregs, battery weak, ) everything seems to be in order i want to clean it up and paint it so my wife will let me park it in the driveway. A couple of questions to you Fergie owners
1. What does the S stand for on the shifter, i thought it was a 5 at first, but that can't be right.
2. Is there an easy way to clean this thing, there appears to be 52 years of cow manure and grease and grime attached to all parts of this thing. I have sprayed cleanser, steamed, waterhosed with no positive results. The only thing that has been productive has been a puddy knife and a wire brush. So far 5 hours spent and only about 1/3rd of the way done. This is 2004, there has got to be an easier way!!!

3. On the transmission, directly under the battery there is some type of switch that is no longer in use, what is this. It has two nuts on it to attach wires, is this a safety switch so it can't start in gear?
4. Any place to get 6 volt accessories, like a light, and has anyone added an aftermarket 6 volt tach to one of these?
5. Any inherent problems i may face?

My wife was tickled at price but not the aesthetic value, dad is not impressed overall and was wanting a new kubota to go with our 4600 Ford.

Thanks much

Andy, one thing to keep in mind...a lot of things on the ferguson look like a lot of things on an 8n or 2n...NOT a lot of them will fit. Good luck, have fun!!

Congratulations on your new tractor. Yes, like the others mentioned, the S is for start. I would try to go back to using the S with the shift handle for two reasons. First it is a real handy place for the start switch and second it is a very much needed safety system so that no-one gets run over with the tractor being started in gear. I have seen this happen and one time two of us almost were run over with a Ford tractor that had the safety system by-passed. The start switch located underneath the battery is available and easy to replace.

Hi Andy, and welcome to the fergie brotherhood....
you will like your 30....The "s" on the shifter cover was for the start position and was directly connected to the switch under the battery as you described. if its dissconnected it probably had a push button starter switch now which is ok just not orignal....if your system is still 6v remeber the saying keep every connection brite and tight and it should start ok.....most of the restortations and updates I do on fergies I convert them to 12v....if you want to stay orginal stick with the 6v and keep it clean. There alot of different cleaning stuff avaible my favorite if doing a complete restortation is to use a cheap oven cleaner....just spray it on by the directions and hose it off....you will still have to scrape some though. And it will take off paint. As far a a grille do a search on this board someone just posted a link to someone who is now building them..... lots of luck with your new tractor and if you need any help your at the right place on this board....

best wishes

It would be a good idea to change the hydraulic fluid. It is one large pool that is shared between the transmission, hydraulic system, and rear end, and there is no filter anywhere. As the years go by the sludge builds up and due to condensation water collects in he oil.
Being heavier, it sinks to the bottom, which uunfortunately is where the hydraulic pump resides. Of course you need the pump in good shape to keep your loader working so treat it well.
I've played around with 3 or 4 old Fergies now and all really needed that oil to be replaced. Next question will be what oil? - you will get lots of opinions. I think you can use MF 1129A or NH 134, which you can find at tractor supply places fairly easily. My local MF dealer recommends "Permatran". The thing to be sure of is that it has a minimum of additives - GL1 is the right stuff.
It will take about 6 US gallons.

the RIGHT oil for the rear is M1103 from MASSEY NOT 1129A

I bought the other stuff because I couldn't get the 1103 around here.
I saw where Big Dean recommended the 134 or 1129 so I went with it.
I would agree if a person can get 1103, go for it.
