TO-30 Won't Start

I bought a TO-30 last fall. It ran when I bought it. This winter I took all the parts off it and painted everything. I replaced the coil, all wires, manifold gasket, regulator, starter switch(ignition), new battery, rebuilt carburetor, distributor cap and plugs. I have spark and the engine cranks but does not cough or sputter. The plugs are dry. I tried spraying gas in a plug hole...but that didn't help. I have played with timing, but even if the timing was off it should still cough! Gas is getting to the carburetor. It cranks well when I choke it. When I try giving it gas the engine stops cranking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to thank everyone that responds to questions. I find the forum to be wonderful reading material.

Thanks Guys! I figured it out. I had the timing off 180 degrees.

When you say you rebuilt the carb, did that mean a complete cleaning (soak over night & clean all passages)? Also when you say mess with the timeing have you static timed it according to the manual? Last when you say replaced all wires did that include spark plug wires and coil wire? Just a few things to check out. You have to love these old girls, they teach us to slow down and have patience(sp). good luck and be safe Terry

Sounds like quite a stumper. When you say you have spark, is it a good, blue spark? I've heard of new coils that were bad, and 12 volt coils sold as 6 volt coils. Sounds dumb, but double check the firing order one more time just to be sure... The only other recommendation is to make sure the carb. is in good working order. After cranking for a couple minutes with full choke, I would think you should be getting wet plugs if the carb. is passing gas.
Did you try that step in the manual where you stick clear tubing into the carb. drain hole and measure how high the gas level is in the carb bowl to verify the float is keeping the gas at the correct level in the bowl? Don't recall the correct height off the top of my head. I forget the default mixture settings in the manual for the adjust screws when you do a carb. rebuild. Might need to fiddle with the mixture adjust screw a little. When I tore down my TO-20, I had a hard time getting the governor and throttle linkages adjusted and working right, actually had the carb. stuck at full throttle no matter what I did, took me hours to sort that out. Might be worth looking at your carb to make sure the throttle is not closed all the way. If all that fails, might need to pull the carb. Good Luck !

How do you know gas is getting to the carb? Did you take the plug out of the bottom of the carb and saw that the gas ran continuously like a cow peein' on a flat rock? If it did, you have plenty of gas a the bottom of the carb. Then I would suspect a problem like a clogged carb passage. It doesn't take much to plug up a small passage in a carb. You might have to open the carb and clean it out. If you didn't get a gush of gas, then starting at the "secret filter" in the carb inlet elbow, work your way back through the fuel supply system to the sediment bowl and it's filter and finally through the screen on the shutoff valve in the tank. When you have established a good fuel supply to the carb, you should be able to start.
Hope this helps.
