I just purchased a TO 30 with a "split" transmission. I think it's called a Sherman transmission. I'm not sure, but this is what I was told. There is handle on the right side of the transmission case at about the seat area. It gives the transmission a "Hi & low" setting in each gear. Is this a Sherman transmission? If it is, will it work well with a 5 ft. wide, 3 point tiller I'm thinking about buying from a friend?
Also, did these tractors have mufflers on them? Right now it just has a straight pipe out the back.

Thanks for the info!

Its a Howard reduction box you have there. for use with a Howard Rotovator. Make sure it drives in all the gears and there are no problems with it because spares are almost if not extinct. Yes the tractors all had mufflers fitted as standard.

It sounds like a Howard, If the shift lever comes out of the dipstick cover it is a Howard, and will run a tiller as the ground speed will be greatly reduced in low range and the PTO speed will remain the same. The Sherman lever is located on the left side foward of the clutch pedal and will reduce your PTO speed as well as your ground speed and will not run a tiller. If it is a Howard don't say a word, just buy it and only you will know what a prize you got.

Enjoy and good luck with your purchace.

Thanks everyone for the info:
I had a chance to look at it a little more yesterday. I think Jeremy is right, I had the handle location wrong in my post. It's actually located right where he said it should be for a Sherman. In first gear it seems a little fast to use with a 5ft. tiller, what do you all think? A few other questions....
1.) Do any of you know if it's possible to change the gear box to a live PTO?
2.) The lift unit is too sensitive and has a very small range before it's either full up or full down (about 1" on the quadrant). I had a very light load on the hitch (about 100 lbs.). Will a heavier load give a wider range? Will the repair manual help with adjustment / repair? 3.) I'm planning on ordering a repair manual. Is A.T.C.s a good one? Is it worth ordering the parts manual? 4.) Does anyone know of any more Ferguson web sites that may be of help (like more pics, troubleshooting info, etc.)?

Thanks,

Bill

Well nevermind you were only about 2ft out with your measurements.
If the hydraulics are so sensitive it sounds like the control spring setting or the hydraulic lever setting...but check the control spring first as this has a bearing on the control lever setting too. with a 2 bottom plow mounted and raised on the linkage move the lever forward till the rear edge of it is 2 1/4" from the max lift position. slacken the four screws that hold the quadrant to the centre housing and gently prise the quadrant forward till the implement starts moving adjust the quadrant till you get the setting and retighten the four screws. Keep away from the implement while you do this as it may drop suddenly.
