as per my previous post I got the head off this weekend, plenty of oil in the coolant but no holes in pistons visible cracks in head or block and the valves seem to be sealing okay, I put the head upside down filled each combustion chamber with gas and it held for at least 20 minutes. There was however no obvious evidence of a blown gasket- no marks that I could see, the only thing I found really wrong was that the thermostat was in several pieces so that will definately be replaced. I have a new head gasket but I wonder if I should do something to the head ? I have a minimal budget - approximatley zero and wondered if I should get the head decked ? can I get that done without pulling the valves ? Help !! Thanks

You can get an idea how flat the head is if you get a straight edged steel rule or something like that and check the head with that for a start...if there is any doubt about it then you can take it somewhere to have it done professionally. Sometimes you can have the head skimmed with the valves left in..but it will depend on the people doing the work...and if you do, you will need to thoroughly clean the head afterwards. Check the cylinder block between the cylinders if its been frozen it will go there. The thermostat should be :-between 56-64 deg. C to 77 deg. C. The cylinder liners should stand proud of the cylinder block by a maximum of .004" and if its level or below the face of the block you will need to replace the gaskets under the liners which are in pairs so the gaskets on this engine are shaped like a figure eight (8)

Yes the same head gasket will work.
For the head gasket, rocker cover gasket, figure 8 gaskets, timing cover gasket and oil seal, and main and rod bearings I would suggest getting the parts from a Triumph TR3. The best deal I have found on these is from British Parts Northwest in Oregon. Actually I think they sell a full gasket set but the manifold and oil pan gaskets don't apply so you might want to check with them about which way is less expensive. They're great to deal with and understand about shipping to Canada i.e. not using UPS.
I have done two of these engines lately so feel free to touch base with me if you have specific questions as you go.
Jim

So it looks like I do have to pull the sleeves ? Is this as horrible a job as I fear ? Do I need the special Ferguson tool made of unobtanium ? Can I re-use the liners ? ( budget - still can't sell my kidney ) Thanks for all the help

Yes pull the sleeves, no not horrible at all, no special tools required, and yes you can re-use the liners, if they aren't worn out. I have put a fair bit about the engine rebuild on my website, which I hope will reduce the scare factor. Check under "My Fergie resto." and click on the engine pictures for more description.

So what do you use to get the liners out ? slide hammer or sledge or a hydraulic jack- nice tractor & sight too - my TR6 is jealous

Hand sledge with a block of wood between it and the bottom of the liner. But, they may not be too tough.

Yes pretty sure they do. I don't have any reference books to hand right now to check. Going from memory though I think they will be ok. While you are doing all this...dont forget to grind the valves in...it will be all that much more worth while when its done...There is never a good time to do all this.

There is a head gasket and bottom gasket set available for this....Sparex part numbers:-
Head set S42085 and Bottom gasket set S42631 they contain all the gaskets you need. Try your local Sparex dealer.
