I have an early grey Fergie which we have used for years, but now will not run. I have renewed all the ignition side, and am now looking at the carby, but cannot find any information or parts. The carby is a Holley 859A updraught. How can you date these tractors? Serial numbers on plate below steering wheel appear to be corroded out. Any information would be appreciated.

AS for the serial # look on the engine on the spark plug side, there should be another plate that has the #'s on it. Try cleaning off with an oily rag to find #'s and use the research to you left. As for the carb, having a Holly is interesting, I may be wrong but am sure all Fergusons either had Zeineth or Marvel Schebler (both mispelled) carbs. Does not mean the Holly does not work, but it may be a problem finding the correct adjustment for it. Maybe a good carg cleaning would help. Good luck, someone out there should be able to help.

Somewhere in my big TE20 service manual I remember that it does show that they used Holleys for a while. What model is your tractor?
I will look it up and let you know what they say about it.

OK I have found the section in the big service manual about the Holley 859A, which they say was fitted to "certain later TEA20 tractors".
Note at the beginning of the section says: "The jet adjustments of this carburetor are very critical, and great care must be taken to obtain the most suitable settings for the particular engine to which the carburetter is fitted."
Here is the adjustment procedure (bearing in mind that the uppermost screw is the the slow speed adjustment and the angled one at the bottom is the high speed): 1. Warm up engine thoroughly. 1. Adjust the screw that stops the throttle shaft to obtain 400-450 rpm idle speed.
2. Approximate setting for the slow running screw is 1/2 to 1 turn open from fully closed. If however there is evidence of rich running i.e. black smoke from the exhaust or hunting, the screw should be gradually turned anticlockwise until the engine runs cleanly and evenly.
3. The main jet (angled one out the bottom) should be initially set 2 turns out from fully closed. When the adjustment is correct and the engine warm, it should be possible to open the throttle quickly and obtain an immediate response in engine speed. Should the engine hesitate, open the main jet one eighth of a turn at a time until the immediate response is obtained, without evidence of black smoke or hunting.

Hope that gets you going.
Jim
