Does anyone know if approx. 320 pto rpm at engine idle and approx. 440 pto rpm at max engine rpm (sorry no tachometer)are realistic pto rpms for my tractor (has 1 1/8" pto shaft with a 1 3/8" 6 spline adaptor on it)? Has anyone used any sort of home-made ratio overdrive (sprocket on existing pto shaft attached to a smaller sprocket on a "dummy" pto shaft to get 540 rpm to drive sickle bar mower (IH) and small square baler (NH). To operate this equipment I have to run full throttle in first gear just to get some pto rpm. This is a problem because I move faster forward when at max rpm (do not have a live pto with dual clutch)

Just a thought, but does this tractor have an auxillary transmission (like a Sherman Hi-Lo)? If it's in Low range, I believe the PTO shaft speed will be slowed just like the reduction in Ground Speed.

For what it's worth.....!

If the engine is set up correctly at max speed the pto speed should be 800rpm and the engine should be running at a no load speed of 2200rpm so what you have been told i.e. about 3/4 throttle, is correct.

Alan, just a thought, are you gearing pto with engine speed or tractor speed?
Not sure about your model but it should be running at engine setting.

Good Luck

Alan,
How did you get these numbers? They are certainly lower than they should be. It's designed to get you the usual 540 pto rpm somewhere within the normal throttle range.
Regards,
Jim

Per The Ferguston Owners Manual for the TO-30, You should get 540 rpm at the PTO when the engine is at 1500 rpm (about 2/3 throttle). I believe the back end of all the TO series is the same, so I would expect your TEA to have the same engine speed to PTO speed relationship.
By the way, how did you determine your PTO speeds?
If your're not getting rated PTO speed than you're not getting rated engine speed. You may need to adjust the governor linkage.

Alan/Ontario;

JerryMT is right. To get 540 PTO speed the engine should run at about 1500 rpm. The ratio of crankshaft speed to pto speed is 2.75 to 1. Mabe you can check it with a tach.
