I'm looking at my muffler and thinking about replacing it due to rust, dents and pin holes. Question 1: The pipe to manifold studs and nuts appear to be rusted into 1 piece. How do I take them out? Question 2: What do I replace the studs & nuts with? Question 3: My parts book shows a muffler shield. I don't appear to have one on the tractor now. Are the shields still used on the new muffler assemblies? Question 4: I plan on using this tractor in my woodlot. Are spark arresters available for these mufflers? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hi Neil,
For the studs, if they are long enough, put on two nuts and tighten them against each other, then after applying lots of heat to the manifold around the stud, undo the stud from the manifold using the upper nut. You can get replacement studs easily at a local auto supply place; they're the same as lots of cars. I don't know about the shield question, but you may want to consider switching to a vertical exhaust. You can get the elbow for $30 and the one-piece pipe and muffler for $35 (Cdn) via someone who retails Vapormatic parts. This way you don't risk the hot muffler touching dry grasses. Plus, it's cool.
Muffler is part # VPE8000
Elbow is part # VPE9002
Gasket is part # VPE3971

Thanks Jim! I agree the vertical pipe does look cool - and for my application may even be safer from a forest fire perspective. I checked the Vapormatic web site and couldn't easily locate dealers who carry their stuff. Do you know anyone who does in the Oshawa to Ottawa area?

Yes, Carleton Auto Parts in Carleton Place is where I got mine. They order it in and the stuff usually comes in under a week. I think the warehouse is in Woodstock or someplace like that.

Maybe you could arrange for them to drop ship to you? Don't know if they will do that.
But I would think a tractor dealer closer to you would be able to get them.

Vertical muffler is a good idea, just remember...Unless you ALWAYS park it indoors you'll need a rain cap, otherwise there's an open hole to the exhaust valves for rain. Good luck, have fun!!
