This probably applies to all tractors, but in this case it is a 52 TO30. I can't get the tractor to turn over and hit from starting it with the starter, but if I roll it downhill it hits right off and runs like a champ! I took the starter off and it does not seem to have a worn bushing, the battery is hot (still 6 volt)and everything else is copasetic. Any ideas? Adjust valves? worn rings=low compression=no start?

Sounds like the typical weak electrical system to me...starter or conections getting a little loose or corroded along with weakened battery and bad connections...using so much current that theres not much voltage going to the coil to fire the engine. Even after servicing all the above, it can still not fire up. Heres my sure fire method that works on mine. (you'll have to know your engine to know whether or not it needs choking though) After you get to cranking on it and when the engine is still whirling over, let off the starter. this will let more voltage go to the coil and if it catches like this...you have proven to yourself that you have a weak electrical system somewhere. It can be the battery, battery connections, or the old rusty connections that the ground gets...for this you might try running a piece of welding cable from the battery connection to a bolt that holds the starter on...just make sure that it is large enough to carry the heavy current required. I always wondered what it was that ailed mine...so with my suspicions, the last time the foreign tool truck was in town...I bought one of those $20 battery checkers. It showed my battery on the weak side. A new one will probably cure the problem...but then I'd have to find something else to "get smarter than the metal" as the old saying goes. Fred OH

Does your starter turn over the engine? I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to tell us.

Starter turns over engine, but it seems to drag a lot and usually won't start. I can roll it down a hill and it will start right up and run great. Thus no carb, fuel or fire problems.

Yesterday I adjusted the valves, they were pretty close to .013 to begin with though.

Have compression in 90 lb range on all 4 cylinders.

Am beginning to think i need a new battery, it can't be that simple can it?

Andy, Thanks for the additional info. You're right fuel and fire sound OK.
Make sure that all your starter connections are bright and tight and that you have battery voltage to the starter lug when you try to start. This is especially true when you have a six volt system. If your voltage is too low, either you have a bad connection somewhere between the battery and the starter or you battery is not fully charged. Make sure that your charging system is keeping the battery at full charge. Also make sure that you don't have any shorts that could discharge the battery. If all that checks out, then you might consider replacing the battery. Your compression sounds OK. Did you do your compression check with the throttle wide open on a warm engine? If you didn't open the throttle fully and your engine was cold, your numbers will only get higher with a wide open throttle. You should also check the compression with a couple of tablespoons of oil in the cylinders. If all your pressures don't come up then you could have a leaky valve or a blown head gasket. Report back on what you find.
Hope this helps.

An old ex-army land-Rover I had used to do the same thing - a head/valve rebuild cured it.

A trick you might try goes as follows:-

Fuel on, ignition off, choke out - crank over 3 turns on the handle.

Fuel on, ignition on, choke out - use the starter (or the handle if you want to be flash, but mind your thumbs!).

Should start straight up, but won't cure the problem.

HTH

This the symptom of the valve clearance being adjusted too tight. It is specificly addressed in the owners manual. Readjust the valve(intake and exhaust) rocker arm clearance to 0.015" cold. The hot clearance is 0.013".

You know Ray, I'm really going to have to read one those things one day :)

Typical injunear, I go straight for the hard fix and ignore the simple stuff. Oh well.
