Tough TO-30 Cold Starts in Warm Weather

I've owned my '53 TO-30 for about four years and it has been a great little tractor. Runs great, especially in the winter when it's zero outside.

When the weather is warm (say above 65-70 degrees) it is a bear to start. Turns over fine, and will catch a bit. Turn over again, and it will catch a bit more, etc., etc. When it's hot out it will take about 15-20 iterations to get it started, then it runs like a champ and will start right back up - until the next cold start.

When it's really cold out (say below freezing) it catches and starts on the first click.

What could be causing this? Is the carb flooding somehow when it's warm but not when it's cold? The hotter the air temperature, the worse the problem (it seems, anyway).

It's not a deal breaker, but it is frustrating and I darn near discharged my battery yesterday starting it.

Thoughts?

Assuming all else is is OK (ignition system and fuel supply) I would tend to agree with John. Try leaning out your mixture out a bit and see if it helps.

Well it sounds as though the mixture is too rich from what you say, I doubt it will be the carb flooding or it would rum out somewhere. It could just be too rich on the main jet, does it smell rich at the exhaust? try screwing the main jet in 1/4 turn at a time ...see if that helps. You could try running the engine at full throttle and screwing the main jet screw in slowly till the engine note changes, then unscrew it till it runs properley, only do it 1/4 turn at a time though. You can do same with the slow running screw, on idle though this time.

Thanks for the tips. I'll putter around with the fuel settings and see what happens.
