I have a TO20 I bought a month ago that is converted to a 12 volt system. My battery died while trying to start it.
Come to find out, the rotor was broke. I got a new rotor and cap, installed them, jump-started the tractor and it ran fine. After about 30 minutes of running, I shut it down. I tried to re-start it..... battery still dead. The guy I bought it from enlightened me saying the alternator doesn't charge. Ilooked at the alternator and noticed that the (one wire) hook up isn't hooked up. I called him back and he said maybe that's why the battery isn't getting a charge. Here's my question.... If the alternator isn't hooked up, AND my battery is dead, how does my tractor run when I jump it over and then disconnect the jumper cables from the battery? It seems that it wouldn't be getting any electrical power with a dead battery and no alternator in line. I'm NOT a mechanic so forgive me if this is a dumb question. Am I missing something here???
Thanks,
Mick

i would be suspisios of the alternator that wasent hooked up ,i would get a meter ,put it on volts and check the output of the alternator at high rpm,s on some of the alternators you have to excite the unit to get it to start charging, anyway you should be getting around 14 volts if it is a 12 volt unit ,just put one lead of the meter on a good ground and the other one on the big post back of the alternator ,take it one step at a time you will get all the help you need on this site
good luck Danny

Your battery doesn't have enough power to turn over the motor but it doesn't take much power to run the ignition system. The small amount of current required by the coil could be supplied by a battery too discharged to turn the engine over. Thats why you can sometimes push start a vehicle with a "dead" battery and get it started. It ain't quite "dead", yet.

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure how much the coil needed to run the system. True, the battery isn't "completely" dead. I'll also check the alternator to see if it's putting out by using the meter. If it's good, I'll hook it back up and case closed.
Thanks again,
Nick
