My kids are 10 and 13.
Any opinions on how old they should be before operating a to30?
Paul

The first time I drove a Ferguson tractor, I was 6. Had to stand up on the clutch and push up on the steering wheel to get it in gear.

I don"t think that ages 10 and 13 are too young to start teaching them how.

What"s been said so far is pretty sound, I think. Start them out with easy stuff, keep them away from ditches and hills, etc.

And don"t let them ride together. Two boys together will do things that one boy alone wouldn"t.

Paul,
Are they responsible enough that you would hand them an appropriate sized chainsaw? If so,(and it was me)I would only allow them to operate it on level ground, I would test them for their responses to emergency situations. Throw out a beach ball in front of them and make sure they understand the controls well enough that they stop the tractor safely and quickly, make sure they understand the importance of stopping the tractor, TURNING IT OFF and setting "parking brake" (i.e. the brake cog) BEFORE attempting to dismount the tractor. I don't think age has anything to do with it. I know some 10 year old kids I would trust and some 16 year old kids I wouldn't. There are certain situations that a tractor can be VERY dangerous. As long as they understand to be very cautious when doing something they have not done before on a tractor, they could probably handle it. There are lots of things kids can do that could get them hurt, they could DIE on a tractor. Make sure they understand that. There are some 10 year old kids out there practically running farms. Good luck.

Paul a lot has to do with the maturity of the kid,i started myself at 12 years old on a tractor on a rough farm in Ireland ,it had a lot of hills and wet ground ,where you might sink to the axel ,i was the oldest boy and had to do it,some of the chances i took were not good and a lot of my friends from those years are still bearing the injuries of long ago ;my own son was 16 before i would let him plough a driveway in the winter and even then i worried and he is a carefill kid, there is a lot of protection today like roll over bars and such but its hard to teach the respect that only the years bring, if they were my kids i wouldnt let them drive for a few years yet good luck

Paul;

Dad started me on the F-12 Farmall when I was 9. However,he was riding the cultivator or the dump rake or pitching bundles. By the next summer we Had the TE-20. We still worked together plowing or mowing alfalfa,he on the F-12 and I on the TE-20. As I grew older I had more responsibility with tractor work.

So be careful and be where you can superevise and instruct. They should enjoy driving the TO-30.

I think you're getting good advice, particularly the part about being around them whenever they start. I was twelve when Dad let me start n the BF Avery we had...but then, it was too slow to be dangerous :) ,,,except when I was fifteen and let a buddy drive it...who promptly put it through the closed barn door. We fixed the door before Dad got home, he never mentioned the zig-zag line down the tarpaper cover on the door. I don't think they should be driving alone, even with all the excellent preliminaries, until older; tractors are deceptively dangerous, as we all know, maybe alone at fourteen, if steady kids,

Best,

George...
