I just got finished re-wiring my TO20 (12 volt system) My question is: Do I still set the spark plug gaps and points gap as per the shop manuals specks, or would anything be set different because of the 12 volt conversion? I read in the archives that the 12volts comes into play at startup only and the ignition system is still running on 6 volts? Is that correct? Also, I have Autolite 124 plugs it the tractor. I bought new 124's and installed them with a gap setting of .025. I noticed the old plugs were gapped at .038. I know what the manual says: .025-.027. Would I have less power with the gaps set at .038?
I think the last owner just took the plugs out the box and installed them without gapping them. Any recommendations on a better plug?

Thanks,
Nick

Nick, you still set the points and the plugs to their same respective gaps. Using the proper ballast resistor makes your coil operate as if it were a six volt system. (Only if you do some special wiring will you have 12 volts to the ignition at start up.) If the plugs were gapped at .038 instead .025 they will probably misfire especially under load. You'll also have hard starting problems. I'm not sure about your Autolite plug numbers 124's. I thought they were more like 386 or 387. Might want to check that out on www.autolite.com.

Your settings will all be the same. Did you change your coil to a 12 volt unit. If not you will a ballist between your hot wire and your 6 volt coil.

Hi Paul...Thanks for the info. My coil is a 6 volt with outside resister. I got it back together today and the alternater works great. With all the rewiring (10gauge) and new alternater, it fires right up real quick. I'm happy about that. I'm waiting on the new muffler&pipe to come in now so it won't sound like a TANK when I start it! The last things left for me to do besides cosmetics are timing and adjusting the carb. It looses a god bit of power under a load and think it might need timing and or fuel adjustments. It's done this from the day I bought it....but I'm getting there. One thing thats my fault is I'm trying to cut tall thick grass with a 5 foot Landpride finishing mower..... ...What I need is to have the 6 acres bush hogged first, then maintain it with the finishing mower.
