I have been noticing a knocking noise from the hydraulic pump when I raise the lift arms or have the arms in a halfway position. The tractor gets intermittent use, maybe 5-6 times a year. I am ashamed to say I bought it about 10 years ago and haven't changed the GL1. The fluid looked really good each time I checked it. Do you guys believe a simple GL1 change will fix it or do I need to pull the pump? I really hate to change the GL1 and the find I have to pull the pump then buy more GL1. What type of problem could cause a hydraulic system knock? There is no knock when the lift arms are in the down position. I appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

My TO20 has been knocking for years, keeps lifting good. Wouldn't worry about it. I have heard some guys say they "fixed" knocking pumps by replacing the relief valve. That may or may not work for you. Also heard guys say they totally rebuild the pump and it still knocks...
I kind-of like the knocking, it tells me my Fergy is work'in hard!

I would guess it"s the safety valve/control valve popping - mine does it when maintaining a level(ish) height with a heavy load on. To be honest, as it is working fine, I"m leaving it all well alone . . . . . . .

I have heard others comment that their machines do it as well, so I guess it is nothing to get stressed over.

Anyone else know differently?

If you have a load on the lift arms and it knocks its just hydraulic action of the pump and nothing to be worried about, some pumps are noiser than others for some reason. Just make sure you have the correct grade of clean oil in the system and up to the correct level, it will catch no harm from the information you give us.

Sometimes if the PTO shaft is not allowed to find it"s center in the pump prior to tightening the retaining bolts that hold the PTO seal housing in place it causes the shaft to run against the pump harder on one side and knock. It costs nothing to try, you"re going to drain the oil anyway, and you can always pour it back into the tractor if you want. Loosen the bolts and bearing housing, start the tractor and engage PTO. Allow it to run a minute and tighten the housing bolts to specs. This may eliminate the knock--or not.

I kinda got to go along with Ray on this as I once had a 9N Ford tractor that I was working on the pump...(same pump as the TO-20)... and I asked the Ford tractor dealer about the knocking and he suggested that I realign the pump...but he also said that they run like that for years and years. The only time it hurts anything is when it"s doing it while sitting beside a red or green tractor. Fred OH

I forgot to say that if the pump has been removed, both must be realigned-the pump and the PTO bearing housing. Use the same method.
