I just opened the lower end of my TO-20 and found that the inside of the block has been painted a reddish orange(its not rust). Has anyone seen this in their engines? I am having the block boiled tomorrow. I think I want to repaint it after I get it back because the lower end is really clean no dirt or sludge and I think this paint might have been the reason. I have seen this done on race engines but never a tractor. This was my grandparents tractor and they tell me its the first time the lower end has ever been worked on.

Could it be red glyptal varnish??? That is used in hot rod engines for the reasons mentioned by others. Available from rod shops.

third party image

I just noticed the first coat of paint on outside of the engine is red. Picture was taken 10 minutes ago.

All the castings are done with that reddish paint to seal them. I would not consider painting the inside of the block under any circumstances. If the paint you apply starts to flake off it could block the filter and oil galleries.

Yes I have seen it many times, mostly on race engines , but lots of engine shops do paint the inside of a cleaned block it helps return oil to the sump and keeps sludge from sticking to bare metal. When I built my z134 cont. I painted mine with restoleium primer....its still there 5 years later and looks clean and fresh inside... I say go for it , but use good primer and make sure its clean and dry before painting. Also I do prefer to brush it on using several coats as opposed to spraying it on...

Best wishes

I work here in a well known Race Engine shop,I would say after you hot tank/clean block,I would not worry about inside paint,Its a waste of time,(we just dont do it anylonger) With the oil flow/drain back numbers of our Z-120,Z-129,Z-134 engines its not needed.Pay attenion to good machine work.
