Just purchased a 1950 Ferguson TO20. I have the 19 inch rim with a 4" tire. The tire has 3 ribs. The owner manual shows a single rib on the front. What is the correct tire design?
The rear wheel is a 12.4 X 28 on 11 inch rim.

Thanks

Early tractors did have a single rib front tyre then they changed to 3 rib and I haven't seen any reference to single rib for a long time so whether they are still available or not I don't know.AS Far as our tractors in UK go I dont think we fitted single rib tyres after about 1948

I think either is correct. It depends on what you want the front wheels to do. The single rib tire tends to smash a groove through soft ground packing the dirt hard under that narrow rib, while the three rip tire tends to do less compaction. Both style tires are still in the tire books, but most tractors use the three or four rib tires when working because they steer good and don't leave compacted ruts in the field (or yard).

Since the three rib doesn't cut such a rut it is also easier to steer when not moving.

The earliest Ford-ferguson that I remember I vaguely recall had the single rib tires.

My handy Goodyear Farm Tire Handbook says of the single rib tire:
"For easy steering in soft soil the Single-Rib tire provides easy, sure footed steering in soft soil such as rice fields and other soggy areas." This handbook used to be available on line and may still be. It says the three and four rib tires give better flotation and steering stability.

Have seen the single rib on n series Fords restored by nth detail purists (not a slur, actually a compliment....I don't have the patience to go to OEM detail in a restoration).

Don't recall seeing a Fergie restored to that degree, so I don't know what was OEM. Don't have a sales brochure either from that time.

Sorry,

Mark

My to-20 tires has three ribs. Tires were bought in the early 70's.
