Well, I actually got to cut grass today after getting the carb set. Without it being set just right sure makes a difference with power. Also, I broke another rotor..... ..bought 3 extras so I was ready. I do have about a 1/4 inch "up-down" play in the distributor shaft. I believe the archives said something about a nut being loose and having to go into through the front of the engine to tighten it???? Can someone enlighten me on that?

The reason that the distributor jumps up and out of it"s seat is...it runs off of a gear on the camshaft which has spiral teeth and when the nut on the end of the cam gets loose, the cam can flop back and forth. When it moves aft, it tries to shove the distributor gear upward causing your problem. Usually find the thin 1/4" thick nut from the end of the cam in the oil pan. Last new nut I put on cam was $10 and should be torqued to specs (don"t recall) and I personally would have it and the cam threads spotlessly clean and use loctite on the threads as this seems to be a semi/common happening with the Continental engine. It"s about a full days job to do if you"re as slow as I am. No other way around it than pulling the front end of tractor off with engine blocked up. Then IIRC pull off the crankshaft pulley and then the timing cover. You"ll see end of cam up at the top...usually with the nut off. Fish down thru the front of oil pan with a magnet for old nut and go from there. Fred OH

John, Fred..... Thanks for all the info. I just got the distributerout of the tractor. The mechanical advancement was completely trashed..(bent steel, ground up spring, sheared post, etc.
I also noticed a spacer above the distributer gear
was worn down to almost nothing. At this point I know I need a distributer.....but is there there a way of telling whether or not the nut on the cam is floating on the bottom of the oil pan without taking the front of the tractor apart....or from what I just described about the distributer and previous posts IS the evidence that the cam is definitely flopping around in there because of a loose/missing nut?

No easy way, only check it visually to be sure. Change the distributor and try it again.

I would have thought that any lash that you have is just in the distributor not the engine,. Remove the distributor from the engine and check for shaft play. You do get wear in the bearing in the distributor, this also makes the contact gap vary which will give rough running.

john, thanks for the info..... I think the tractor was one step ahead of me today. I was cutting grass and all of a sudden, she dies.....
the distributor jumped up about an inch and a half out the engine. I guess the clamp was loose. At that EXACT time, it starts to POUR DOWN RAINING! So Fergie is out in the field all by herself tonight... I'll tow her in and pull the distributor tomorrow and see if any damage was done... I hope not. I need to rebuild or replace the distributor anyway. I'll post an update.
