Hi guys. If I put a new distributer in the tractor and turn the motor over with the distributer cap off and see no play/vertical jumping around of the shaft, can I assume that the camshaft is in an okay state with nut secure....or do I need to have the tractor running at an appreciable RPM to confirm this? In my earlier post, I was explaining that the tractor was breaking rotors. When I took my old distributer apart, I noticed the advance mechanisms were chewed up and gouged up.
Thanks,
Nick

If you put a new distributor in the engine and you have any vertical play then something is wrong with your new distributor. I think you will find that the old distributor was worn out and that is what was causing your problem with rotors. Dont forget to oil your new distributor regularly to stop that wear.

I JUST got another distributer from a company on the internet for 75 dollars. It was a pull from another tractor...feels real solid. I'll put this one in after finding TDC and try to time it.
I'm just hoping that my camshaft isn't loose and jumping around in there causing distributer troubles. If it is, I guess I'll be pulling the front of the tractor apart next.
Thanks for all the help.

Nick

I think you are expecting something real bad with your camshaft. The camshaft is held in three bearings in the cylinder block and the movement if any will only be a few thou so you wont feel dramatic movement there.
