i thought i had a leaking head gasket but when i pulled the head the gasket looked o.k. didn't really see anywhere it may have been leaking. the reason i thought head gasket was leaking is because #3 cylinder was getting wet. also had oil in radiator but no water in oil. well anyhow after pulling head and cleaning everything i found a long verticle crack in piston sleeve #3. all others look o.k. should i replace all sleeves or can i just replace the cracked one.

You can just replace the bad sleeve. New sleeves are usually sold as a piston/sleeve set. I'm pretty sure I have seen single piston/sleeve for about $50, but don't recall where. A lot of the new piston/sleeve sets are the oversized "power" sets. I'm no expert on this, but my guess is you want to use a replacement sleeve with the same I.D. as the other sleeves. It seems like the engine would be out of balance with one oversized piston. If your engine has been rebuilt before, maybe you already have oversize sleeves, probably need to check that to be sure.

Might need to shop around a bit to find an original I.D. sleeve, or a used sleeve.

well upon futher inspection i found #1 & #2 cracked as well as #3. the cracks in #'s 1 & 2 did not go all the way trough the sleeve but #3 was all the way. they were cracked where there was a small hole drilled and and a piece of bolt was inbetween the sleeve and block right at top of cylinders. bolt was verticle. maybe this stressed sleeves. block had cracks between all cylinders and has been welded at bottom. top has cracks also and looks like they were addressed also. found stamp on crank nov. 87 i removed pistons and sleeves yesterday and am going to order kit to replace them. i am sure i will be back for more pointers from you guys. i dont know if i would attemped to tackle the sleeves if i hadnt read some of post on this site. thanks for everyones knowledge. billy j.

I had not really heard of repairing the top cracks quite that way before. Is that bolt tapped and screwed, or does it look brazed or welded?
If you have the time, might want to get a second opinion on that block repair job from a good welder or machine shop... you don't want to do this all over again some day.
I have heard of drilling a hole between the ribs horizontally, just under the top of the head, and running a bolt thru that way to try to hold the top ribs together.... OK, I have done that before myself.

Sounds like your crank may have been machined, it might also have a stamp, something like 001 or 003 or along those lines, to indicate if it was turned down. Need to know that if you decide to get into bearing inserts for the mains or rods so you get the right size inserts.
Good luck!

only one of the bolts was actually between cylinders others were in different places. but each cylinder had one 1/2 in sleeve 1/2 in block i dont know if this was done to keep sleeve in place or what. all sleeves were good and snug had to tap'em good to get them out. i will check crank again to see if there is any other stamps on it. thanks for your replies i will keep everyone posted on my progress.
