I have a friend with a 135 diesel MF than let a friend borrow his tractor and it came back with the PTO not working. He has asked me to fix it .I would appreciate any ideas as to what the problems could be .
Thanks Donald

The most common 135 PTO drive is a sliding gear. Has three positions, ground driven (off transmission), neutral, and live. The live position is driven by a second clutch plate. Shifting to the live position requires pushing the clutch pedal a couple inches past where the tractor stops or it grinds a whole lot. There is another option without the ground driven and with a separate clutch for independent PTO,

In the common live PTO option, things have to run a little to get the gear to mesh when shifting. It won't always go in gear when nothing is turning at all in the PTO drive line. The gear teeth have to line up.

If the shift cover has been off to change the oil filter, its really easy to not get the shift yoke back on the gear. I've done that more than once.

It would be really easy for a user unfamiliar with the tractor to have difficulty shifting or to try to run a brush hog in the ground driven position where an over running clutch is needed just like on a 8N and to have the inertia of the brush hog twist off the drive, probably the PTO shaft when stopping with the nose of the tractor against a telephone pole.

The I&T manual that covers the MF-135 covers the PTO options in detail to show how to fix whatever can be wrong. Your friend needs a copy of that along with a copy of the right vintage owner's manual.

Guess he's learning the hard way; you don't loan your equip.

Don't mean to sound harsh, but this stuff is not indestructable and it takes an experienced operator to know his equip, what it can do, how it can do it, and how much to put on it. The guy who borrows it doesn't have this kind of background.

You need to talk. What do you do and what does it not do. Is it live PTO? What was the neighbor doing when he used it?

Engaging the pto on the earlier tractors was mere sliding a splined yoke from the pto output shaft over the transmission pto drive shaft. There is linkage between the lever and this yoke he could have bent.

Or he isn't moving the engagement lever far enough.

Or he didn't stop the shafts from turning before trying to engage.

Or he could have sheared the spline of the yoke or one of the two shafts,

Or he could have goofed up the clutch if the pto is separately driven.

Or if transmission driven, he could have broken a gear or shaft in the tranny.

Need to know more info.
