Well..... ..... after destroying another distributer (against my better judgement) I decided to CURE the broken rotor/trashed distributer syndrome! I pulled the frontend apart to get to the timing gear cover. SURE ENOUGH, the NUT on the camshaft gear almost fell off, it was so loose! Because of that much play, it also destroyed the fly-wieght retainer..... ...and i'm only counting NINE weights/bearings, instead of ten..... .I guess the other one is swimming right now in the oil pan....(I hope) I'll have to locate another fly-weight retainer, and a tenth ball bearing before I put it back together and torque down the nut on the camshaft gear....BTW, does anyone know what to torque that nut to???

Thanks to fred OH, John(UK), Big Dean, and all the rest of you guys for all the help! I would not have a clue what to do if it weren't for y'all guiding me. I'll send a post when I get it all back together.

Thanks again,

Nick

The book calls for 70 to 80 foot lbs. for the cam gear retaining nut. I"d clean the threads on the both of them (nut and camshaft) and apply loctite on them and then torque to spec...to possibly prevent nut loosening again. When a specification calls for like 70 to 80 lbs., I always shoot for the middle of it. Get you a magnet on a stick and probe around in the oilpan and see if you can find the other missing ball...down thru the opening in the front of the pan. If the front seal on the timing cover was leaking any oil...now is the time to replace it too. Use a good gasket sealer putting it back together. Fred OH
