Today is Thanksgiving Day here in Canada. It was a beautiful day but cool this morning. 8-10 C (46-50 F). I drove 20 minutes down the highway on my Fergie (TEA20) to do the last bush hogging of the season on a friend's property. One of today's lessons is that a steel seat NEVER warms up! The second lesson today was from an old timer I saw driving a IH Super M down his lane. I U-turned and followed him down his lane where he was getting ready to hook-up a 10' bushhog. We chatted about my Super W6 being the sister to his Super M. He told me he didn't convert to 12 volts but he carries a 12 volt battery for starting. He has the thing wired up so he connects a ground (+ve) and then touchs the other lead to the -ve terminal on the starter. He bought the tractor new in 1952 and has been using it ever since. He was confident this starting arrangement wasn't causing him other problems. It is topical for me as I couldn't start my 6 volt Super W6 on Sunday night - it has sat a long time but the battery was charged. Any thoughts on starting a 6 volt system with a short shot of 12 volts?

Over on the N board they were discussing the 12 volt jump starting of a 6 volt system all summer. There was a procedure provided. Dell(WA) and SounNdguy were the experts. You may want to try a archive search on that board.

I can not believe it, I too live in Canada, have a Ferguson TE-20 and a McCormick (IHC) Super W6-TA both with 6 volt systems. I would not try to jump 12 volts to 6 volts; but if my electrical theory is right, if you have a 12 volt source and run it in series with a 6 volt load, 6 volts leaves the other end. What you need is a 6 volt load that would allow about 275 amps to flow through it.

Jerry, I didn't mention the TA but yes mine is so equiped. I have a FEL stuck out the front so it is quite the change to hop onto the "big" tractor after driving the little grey fergie! My fergie has been converted to 12 volts so I have one of each. Neil

Neil, Yes my IHC has a FEL but I use it mostly for moving large round bales. Both the Ferguson & IHC are fun to have around. For future information,is there tractor wreckers near you?
