I found a TO 20 under a pine tree and bought it for $ 650. it has a dead battery which I will replace. I do not have experience with tractors and I am at a loss as to how you start this tractor. Does the transmission have to be in a specific position? Is there a start button? The ignition switch seems to only turn to on, is that part of the process? Please help me if you can. Thanks, Big O

I don"t know if your tractor looks exactly like my french TEF but as explained you have to push the shift lever exactly as if you had a 5th gear. BUT...Don"t forget to unlock the start position by pushing the unlock button on the right side of the gearbox (downright on the photo).
If it doesn"t work properly (the first time it is not easy) you can also push manually the lever going to the starter. Be carreful to have no gear engaged !

Turn the key to on and push the transmission lever to the S (for start). If all parts are good you should hear it begin to turn over. The site below has good info on Ferguson tractors

Look down on the gear shift plate and you should see raised lettering indicting the shifting pattern, i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and R for reverse. You will also see an S above the R, the S is for start. Basically it is a manual starter solenoid. To start the tractor with the gear shifter, turn the ignition on then push the shifter towards the "S", if it turns over your GTG. You will probably need to add fresh fuel and turn the fuel on at the sediment bowl which is located about midway down the tank just above the distributor. Turn the wheel out to allow fuel to flow to the carb. If with a fresh battery the tractor's starter won't turn over with the gear shifter, then someone may have installed a std automotive electrical solenoid somewhere near the starter and if so there will have to be a push button somewhere, perhaps on the dash like mine is, to activate it.

Good luck
