Friends

I wandered aimlessly around the 8N, 2N discussion board for a couple of days until someone told me my tractor looks like a TO-30. So I came here and now I think it might be a TO-20, because it's a 4-speed transmission, with START to the right & up, and REVERSE to the right and down. Also, there is no "FORD" logo to be found, but there's a "Ferguson" plaque on the front and somewhere else, if I remember correctly.

I'll check the serial # if I can find it and I'll be back tomorrow. Anything else I should check to identify it.

I'll try to post a picture, but if it fails, there's a couple posted as 19XX 8N in the 8N Photos section over there.

Thanks in advance.

Gary from North Bay

Yep, soundls like you got a Ferguson.

There are 4 main possibilities for your tractor... TO-20 TE-20 TEA-20 TO-30.

All fairly easy to Identify....

1st look for a name plate near the strreing wheel. This plate will have you serial number and will start with a TO, TE, or TEA. This will tell you what you have.

Missing the serial number plate look at the left side of the engine. Near the bottom may be a cast number....

If it says Z124 you have a TO-30
if it is missing and you have the oil fill to the rear and an external oil filter, then you have a TEA-20
If it says "Z-120" then you either have a TE-20 or a TO-20. To distinguish the difference look at the gear shift plate. If this plate is a piece by its self then it is a TO-20 if integral with the steering column then it is a TE-20.

Please post back, and we'll reall nail it down.

Jeff

The TO series of Harry Ferguson tractor all use Contental engines. Above the Distrubutor will be one of the following: the TO20 will have Z120 cast into the block, the TO30 will have Z129 cast into the block. The numbers are the cubic inches of the motor.

A site for other info on the Ferguson is>Link

Besides>Link the name plate behind the steering column and engine id/size as the others described, another distinguishing feature to tell if a Ferguson is a TO-20 is the location of the oil filter, which is located behind a round cover on the bottom of the oil pan. The TO-30 is located, I believe, on the left side of the engine. Both filters are cartridge type though. Harry Ferguson made several improvements on his tractors over the Fords, like 4 speed trans, overhead valves, cast iron trans housing, fully opening hood for ease of maintenance. He invented a long list of things. The site I listed talks to these. I knew nothing of old tractors when the I bought my Ferguson 3 years ago, I know dum at the time but it didn't leak oil and ran good and lift worked. I now know I have a 1951 TO-20, love it and use it for lots of work around the place.
