PTO Spline Adaptor????????

I have a 1952 TEA and this past weekend, my snowplow driveshaft pulled off of my PTO. When I looked at it, there appeared to be a smaller PTO spline underneath what appears to be a larger adaptor.

Is there a larger PTO spline than fits over the smaller original (I didn't have much time to examine it - I had to get the driveway done so I used the 6-way blade)? Is it common for these to break?

Gary

I have a 1-1/8" to 1-3/8" adapter for my TO-30 and I doubt that you can break it. It appears to be a "hog out" machined from a single round of steel and is held in place with a roll pin. Unless yours is made from a sheetmetal stamping, I doubt that you broke it. The roll pin might have come out or sheared. My adapter came with the tractor when I bought it and I remove when not using the PTO so I can put the safety cap on over the shaft. When I lay the machine up next winter, I intend to replace the original shaft with the 1-3/8" replacement.

the "standard" PTO diameter now days is 1 3/8 inch. The original PTO back in the 50's was 1 1/8 inch.. That adapter sleeve lets you hook-up 1 3/8 PTO implements. Pretty standard practice. Use a roll pin like James says.
If you have money to burn, you can buy a new aftermarket 1 3/8 PTO shaft for about $100.
I shredded two of those cheap adapter sleeves running a flail mower and bought myself a new PTO shaft for Christmas last year.... I've been REAL happy with the change.
Good luck!

Gary - these adaptors are quite a common fix to get round the older Cat 1 PTO diameter. Usually they are held onto the 'proper' PTO by a roll pin that passes thro both the adaptor sleeve and the tractor PTO. Some people use a bolt and a locking nut - personally I do not like that idea.

I have one fitted to my TED - and have given it severe welly over the years - I have had roll pins break, which is potentially dangerous as the shaft can then disengage from the tractor, but have never yet had the sleeve adaptor break.

From what you have said, it sounds like you need to replace the roll pin - it could have sheared after a lot of 'chatter' on a loose PTO. Easy to fix.
