Replace engine or tractor?

I've found a complete and running 2085 engine to go into my TEA 2080. Cost is reported to be about half of buying another 2085 in running condition. I'm already into the mechanic for about $200 to discover my cam shaft is scored and block damaged. I figure I need the mechainic to do the r/r (remove/replace) as I don't have a heated shop nor do I have lifts etc. So I'm figuring about $500 difference between another engine and another tractor. Your opinions please. Neil PS Wife doesn't like either choice!

Gosh Neil, what a choice; the devil you know or the devil you don't know. What do you know about the other machine?

A remanufactured block should cost you in the neighborhood of $500 (US)+ shpg and a remanufactured short block is about $1500(US)+ shpg. Are you sure your block can't be repaired? Switching out the engine is a real piece of cake. I've had mine off several times.

If your existing machine is in good shape and only needs work on the engine, it might be good idea to look into getting the engine repaired. IF your tractor is going to need a bunch of work on it's systems c(i.e.,clutch, hydraulics, tranny, PTO, final drive, etc)besides the motor and IF you know the "new" tractor doesn't need any work on the systems and that the engine ONLY needs bearings, then you might consider going with the "new" machine. You'll have to weigh all this out and decide.
Good Luck.

Hi Neil... Just a couple of thoughts. My wife says I'm a glutton for punishment. I buy old English sports cars, instead of late model sports cars. I buy old tractors instead of more modern ones. I buy old farm houses instead of new "better built" houses. If you"re not in love with old things, and are not prepared to work on them, I would seriously point you in the direction of a newer tractor ie 1990s. I personally have a love/hate relationship with the gery mennace. Good luck, Merry Christmas, have fun!!! Mike

Figure on getting a new clutch disc while it's apart, so another $100 or so.
You can do the job yourself but it will require some grunting. It's supposed to warm up, don't worry, it won't be -30 all winter!!
I think really it comes down to how much you know about the new engine vs. a different tractor. Has the engine been rebuilt, good compression, etc?
Then there is the rear end of your existing tractor to think of. Being a 2080 it will have the smaller diameter differential crown gear and shorter teeth on the pinion, and after seeing three of them I believe the beefed up rear end after serial number 325,000 or so is worth having, if you can be so choosey. But if you are not a heavy user that may not be too critical.
Are your present hydraulics good? That's significant.

If you get another tractor you will then have a great source of parts from your existing one.
Some thoughts.
Jim

The other tractor is a 2085, I don't know a lot about it other than the dealer selling it says it is in good mechanical shape. The good news though is that the accountant told me today that we're getting a whopping big tax return this year - thanks to turning my woodlot into a "farm woodlot". Farms need tractors so ... how can my wife resist another Fergie in the driveway? Thanks for sharing your thoughts and Merry Christmas!
