First, I am trying to locate the serial number of my TO-30. I am looking at the plate above the steering wheel where the serial number is supposed to be, but all I see are patent numbers and canadian patent numbers but no serial number. Am I looking at the right thing?

Secondly, I live in PA and we are currently having real cold nights but unusually warm afternoon weather. I went into my barn today and noticed my rear tractor rims and tires were dripping wet towards the bottom. This could have only gottin wet by condensation but why? I do have calcium in the tires. Does anybody else have this problem or found a way to avoid it, this can't bee good fot the rubber I would think.

The serial number should be along the TOP edge of the plate prefix TO ****....as far as I know there is no other way of readily telling the serial numbers on TO tractors, you can get an idea of when it was produced from the dates cast into the axle housings. The numbers Vince is talking about are only on French produced tractors not US or UK production models, would have been a good idea if they had but then no doubt someone would be grinding the numbers off.

John is right. I just stepped off my TO-30 a couple of hours ago and noted that the serial number is stamped on the top of the plate.

Hi Jerry, I have never been able to check what they say about the date being cast into the trumpet housings on most TO tractors, could you check your tractor to see if this IS correct. TY

John, All I've ever noticed on the trumpet(rear axle) housing is a casting number, but I will take a closer look and get back to you. I find it hard to believe that the individual tractor number would be cast into the housing, however. Maybe stamped, but not cast.

Sorry Jerry, I didn't mean the serial number if thats what I said I mean the casting date, so it gives you some idea of the age of the tractor.

You did say date, John. I still have the original question on my mind re: serial numbers.

I looked at my 1954 TO-30 and on the right side trumpet housing are some numbers cast into it but with the poor light and the layers of paint, I can't read them. The other cast markings are the diamond HF and the large casting numbers.

Jerry,
The serial number must be at the bottom of this plate!
but it is also stamped into the block on the right hand side of the gear box, near the start buttom!
or between the seat and the gearlevel! Hope this helps you,
Vince
PS: happy new year JERRY !

Yep the plate above the steering wheel should have some numbers stamped near the bottom,e.g.
TO XXXXX .
If you have CaCl solution in the tires, they cool down at night and, due to the specific heat of solution and it's mass, the temperatur of the solution does not reach the ambient air temperature (it "lags" the outside air temperature significantly)and thus is cooler than the ambient temperature. The water vapor from the air thus condenses on the cooler tires. Since solution doesn't fill the entire tire, the condensate will only show up to the level of solution in the tire.
