I just noticed in your posting your repair guy told you to use 90 weight gear oil. This is the WRONG oil for these rear ends that incorporate a hydraulic pump. You HAVE TO USE a hydraulic oil that is designed for rear end use. There are many different trade names out there and like I said I have use Esso Hydraul 56 with no problems.

Please read the many posts on here about this..It is NOT wrong...you MUST use a Straight Mineral(no detergents or additives of any kind) GL1 oil as specified 80 weight below 50 deg or 90 weight above 50 deg.It has always been this from new. This has been extremely well researched by guys on here and is posted for all to see. I suggest you look all this up on here for your own information. No doubt there will be other replies on this subject so watch this space. If you would like it in print with a page from the Instruction book for the tractor, please email me at fergusontractors at hotmail dot com

This posting was a mistake as was intended to part of the dicussion bellow about gary's (North Bay) problems. John, thanks for lecture on oil we don't talk so much about mineral oil over here, but Jim makes the point the best of anyone on these two postings 90 weight gear oil will simply not thin enough to work the hdraulics properly in these temps. And Gary has 90 weight gear oil in his rear end, sorry Diff. Call it mineral oil call it hydraulic oil thats what he should be running and nobody has realy told him that.

Err actually we do talk a lot about straight mineral oil on here, so it IS over there, just look through the archives and see. Its nothing magical its just oil without additives, that is the crucial thing. We will probably find out that the 90 weight GEAR oil is not that at all it maybe 90 weight but it has been assumed that it is gear oil because of the designation of 90 weight, this has happened before. I don't think the Massey man will be so stupid as to put gear oil in the hydraulics.

Gear oil expects to run at hotter temperatures so for a given weight (SAE #), is thicker when cold than say GL1. Oil "thins out" to its SAE viscosity # when it gets to operating temperature, so SAE90 gear oil and SAE90 straight mineral oil (GL1) are not the same viscosity at room temp.
Hope that's clearer than it looks.
Anyway what I mean is that with our slow moving tractor tranny and diff gears, 90 gear oil won't get warmed up enough to thin out. Meanwhile the hydraulics are using it - too thick.
Hunt around and find GL1 if you can, or else go to something like Shell Donax TD, or MF1129.
My two cents'.
Jim
