Will a gen. from a TO30 fit on a TO20 without having to change the brackets? I have searched the forum without any luck.

Thanks,
Oldgit

The two generators are mounted with completely different brackets. You can mount a 20 generator on a 30 if you drill through a boss in the block so that the mounting bolt will go through. This is not drilled out on a TO-30. I did it on mine but it is hard to drill the hole straight with a hand held drill. The TO-30 generator has a bracket that uses two bolts to attach to the block. I am not sure if the TO-20 block has the bosses in the block available to drill. I could look if you would like. I am looking for a TO-30 generator if yours becomes surplus. I actually put a rebuilt TO-30 engine in my TO-20.

Oldgit... Don't see any reason, why not. You may have to loosen the bolts and "clock" it, but I don't think so. Mike

I've been wondering about these generators. I have an old Delco generator said to be off a TO-20. It has a large "wing" near the front, which is integral to the front plate casting, and a slightly smaller one welded on about mid-way back to the rear of the generator. It would seem that this would hang by a pivot bolt through a lug, or boss, on the front edge of the crankcase casting (its there on my TO-20's crankcase). I've seen this only in one photo, and all the others seem to be what I thought the TO-30 generator was like, with a pair of lugs, one at either end. When I got my TO-20 it had an alternator conversion to 12v, and so far I've played "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But some day, probably in a fit of "originality insanity", I may try to put it back to "original", and wanted to know what that was.

Thanks, Steve
