How hard to replace TO-20 oil pump?

Earlier I posted on the lack of oil pressure on my TO-20. I tried the things suggested but no joy. The local MF guy said that early Fergusons did sometimes have oil pump failures.

How hard is it to change the pump? I know I need to remove the oil pan, but is this a job for a home, not overly skilled mechanic??

Geo, the pump is easy to pull and rebuild. Just need to drop the pan to get at it like the other guys said. Hand tools and a manual are all you need to get the pump in and out.

I rebuilt my pump last Winter. I found the main problem with my pump was that the relief valve was worn real bad and letting oil bypass. Luckily, the relief valve is part of the rebuild kit.

The hardest part of the rebuild for me was getting the aluminum drive gear installed straight, and drilling/tapping it for the set screw, which needs to be drilled 1/2 in the aluminum and half in the steel shaft. After wallering out my first attempt with a hand drill, I had to take the pump to a friend with a drill press to get a straight hole to tap the set screw. There is some sort of tool you can buy to help install the drive gear I believe. I'm no master mechanic and got the jog done without it.

A press would have helped a lot, especially if you decide to press in new bushings when rebuilding the pump.

Make sure that you have a factory shop manual before you start the job. A parts manual is handy also. It shows you the relatioship of all the parts and pieces. I take it you haven't removed the pan yet. When you do, make sure that you examine the oil pick up tube first. If it's loose or not sealed, your pump won't prime and you won't have oil pressure. If that's the case you can repair it and not have to remove and replace the pump. Good Luck.

George it is not a hard job to do. The two front main bearing bolts hold it in place. It can be rebuilt or replaced. Just make sure when going back together with it you get the gear backlash correct with shims between the pump and main bearing cap. Dave
