I have a 51 TO-20 that I have rebuilt the hydraulic pump. I installed a complete re-build kit inclueding new valve chambers and relief valve. My problem is when I lift an implement it shakes and jitters and lifts slow. I can also hear the pump knocking slightly. Seems like the pump is laboring. Oil level is full. I use GL-1 TSC ford tractor hyd. oil. What do I need to do to correct this? Am I doing any damage to the pump? Thank you for your help.

If it is shaking and jumping when lifting it is a sure thing that one or more of the pumps is not pumping. You say that you put new pump chambers on the pump. It is possible that the valve champer valves were not assembled right or that something was left out of one or more of the valve chambers. I would take the clamp bracket and bolt out of first one side and then the other and inspect the valves, springs and pins that the valves move up and down on. May have gotten a piece of old gasket in one of the valves and it is holding it open

This pump requires no priming. It is self priming since it runs submerged in oil.

Hi Zane, there are occasions when the pump does not prime itself, rare, but it happens. It even mentions this in the Service manual. I only ever had this once in all the time I was repairing them, so you do have to include it in the checks.

If it continues to jerk as it is lifting it could be that it isn't running on all 4 cylinders (the pump not the engine) it is possible that you have air trapped in it , doesn't happen often, try slackening off the setscrew on top of the side chambers with the pump running and see if it will bleed the air out. You will have to do this on both sides. DON'T PUT YOUR HANDS IN just run it with the setscrews just slack and the lever in lift, then tighten them up again. If after that it still jerks you may have to drop the pump out and check the side chamber gaskets and the pump base gasket where the pressure point is, just in case it has blown the gaskets.

I have found the replacement gaskets are thinner than the original - the one that goes between the pump and the bottom of the transmission case. It didn't seem to be a problem on mine but this would allow the pump to sit a bit higher, which would make it less than ideally aligned for the pto shaft to slide through.
There might also be a bit of left-right adjustment available i.e. if you loosen the pump's mounting bolts a bit, with the pto shaft installed, you might be able to find a spot where the pto turns more easily, which would indicate better pump alignment.
My two cents.
Jim

Good thinking from Jim, but these pumps can always make a noise due to their design, especially when under load..it"s nothing to worry about. Being a piston pump as opposed to a gear type pump it can always make some kind of noise.
