Oil pressure

Today while running my To-20, I noticed the reading on the oil pressure gauge dropped from about 30 to less than 10. Is this normal? Also, after this happened, I noticed it started leaking oil quite a bit. Thanks in advance for any advice.

This has been discussed many times in the past. You might reseach the archives for more. The to's don't always have good oil pressure. My to-20 was run for years with 5 psi then we did a rebuild and has 30 psi since. I would advise like the others have change the oil and filter, find and fix the leak and check for gas or water in oil.

No disrespect to John (UK) -(I"m also east of the "pond" but a tad further south) but I wouldn"t run an engine on 10psi until I"d found the cause and sorted it. Given your comment re oil leaks, the suggestion about fuel getting into the oil makes sense. We"ve owned a "47 TE 20 from new and I know these motors don"t have the sort of pressure modern stuff needs, but anything much less than 30psi under load is likely to accelerate crank or bearing wear. Contaminated lube is also likely to cause excessive camshaft & follower wear.
If an oil change & filter clean (assuming gauge hasn"t become faulty) doesn"t cure it, I"d be looking at oil pump and bearings. Has an oil pipe to the pump failed? Frankly I wouldn"t risk engine running at 10psi.
Sorry to sound so negative - just don"t want you to risk unnecessary engine damage.

I suggest you look at the number of postings from these guys who have Z120 engines that run at extremely low oil pressure. The oil pressure was never very high (30/40psi)on these engines from new and with a bit of wear in them it goes even lower. Most engines do require more oil pressure and I wouldn't run any other engine with oil pressure like this but the Continental seems to thrive on it, I have seen the Standard engine (40/60psi)with this oil pressure too but really its far too low for one of them. But take some time to read the postings on here from the guys who have them and use them. Regarding 30psi on an old Continental it's more or less unheard of, its a lot nearer 10 than 30 as the postings here will indicate. If the oil pressure is wrong then all of them are wrong. A LOT of Continentals run around this pressure as you will see.

Its not unusual for this engine to run on low oil pressure, as the other writer says though check your oil and change it regularly, The original oil spec for that engine was SAE40 don't forget to change the filter too, that can have something to do with lack of oil pressure. The oil pump could need renewing if it has done a lot of work and if everything else fails. The oil leak could be due to too much oil in the pan but you have to find out why that is, it could be unburnt fuel and the leak will need fixing but you don't tell us where the leak is so we can't help with that till we know.

pull the dip stick and check if smell like gasoline and is runny,some of your gas could have found its way into the oil pan and thinned it out causing a drop in pressure ,
