I ran the 35 for an hour today and froze three fingertips. And that's with the best snowmobile mitts I own. Anybody have a solution?

I do a lot of plowing on my TO30 and use big mittens with jersy glove under them along with one of those throw away hand warmers in each mitten. Spray your mittens with a silicone water proofing that will help greatly.

Layers. Try bigger size mitts, with wool or polar fleece mitts inside, and thin cotton or polar fleece gloves inside those. Wife and I often have to blow snow in -40 temps on our old 2N Ford. Never gotten really cold yet.

Did you ever see the TE20 tractors that went to the South Pole, they didn't have a heater but they did have a canvas cover that went over the hood and was tied down to the tractor at the bottom and it formed a "tunnel" that contained all the warm air from the radiator and was blown at the driver, to increase the heat output they partially blocked the radiator from the bottom (the coldest part) and the hot air was from the top. I think the South Pole may have been as cold as you are. Might be worth a try, it would be cheap enough, very little expense I would think. Just keep your eye on water temperature though till you get the blanking off right.

Seriously - if anyone wants hot gloves, electrically heated ones are available from m/cycle people. They"re listed between GBP 50 and 115, though! Don"t know how you guys survive up there.
If I had snow to shift in those temps, I"d not be using my fergie - it"d be a heated cab job.

An old farmer (Karl Harvey, owner of the Big Potato in NB) who started his career as a flight instructor in Cornells (PT22?) in WWII had an ingenious solution. (Some of his flying was at Pendleton.)

He wired up small 12 v light bulbs and put an appropriate rheostat in series for temp control, put one in the toe of each of his boots, and in his mitts, then clipped them to the battery - which on the Cornell was in easy reach, just ahead of his knees.

Now that sounds ingenious. A couple of trailer light bulbs would provide just about enough heat for a mitt, although the way I back the tractor up, it might take a lot of bulbs and band aids to get through a winter.

My wife suggested the pepper packs used by ice fishermen. Open, shake, and keep the appendage warm for a couple of hours. A visit to Bennett's Bait and Tackle might involve less effort than getting to the battery on the MF35 with alligator clips.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I switch off hands, and stick each one inside my coveralls for a minute or so.

Rod have you thought about getting a heater cab they cost about $250 but they are a big help they have a windshield with doors they make the heat from the engine blow back over you.

Morning Rod
Funny thing, I was doing the same thing as you on the weekend. Even tho I dont have to look backwards while plowing ( remember from my pictures in parts and pieces ) I had big mits on and still my hands froze. I thought for a bit and then it hit me. I know what I can do. So here is my plan. Now its going to take some doing, but bare with me. Im going to take the rad hose and extended it down the right side of the tractor. I have a buddy who works for NASA ( not really but he can build anything ) he is going to make me a plastic pair of underwear with 2 hose hook ups. One for the incoming rad antifreeze and the second for the return line back to the rad. The way I figure ,,,is that once the antifreeze leaves the rad it will cool down to exactely 98.3 degrees. Perfect plowing temps for the body to work at peak performance. or if this doesnt work out then Im going to plan "B",, head to the sunny south for the winter. The only problem with that is I have 10 more years to go before that happens. So I guess we Canadians are going to have to tuff out. Heck everybody else in the world thinks we live in Igloos anyway. Stay well Rod

get a cab, move to a warmer clime, get someone else to do it whilst you stay indoors, hibernate, steer it with your feet on the ball joints and keep your hands in your pockets, buy heated gloves..... ...

Gerard, you left out another option. He could get him a battery powered "blow dryer". Hear it works great in colder climates but, you have to hold it between your legs so you can keep your right hand free to steer.
