Hello,

Doing a oil change on my 51 t0-20 and noticed three pieces of metal(1/2"x3")in bottom of oil pan. I took to local Napa store and guy said they look like govenor weights off the crank? Any ideas? Seems to run ok. Doesn"t burn any oil? I dont want to drive it if it could do some damage. Please help with any advice?

Doesn't really sounds like governor pieces that I would expect from a ball-type governor, I'd expect big ball bearing in the pan. If your governor is working, it probably ain't governor parts, unless it was parts from a previous repair.

Pulling the oil pan only takes ~30 minutes, each way. I recommend doing that to check everything out real good. You won't see the governor itself, but might be able to shine a light and mirror to look up in the timing gear housing. Pulling the timing gear housing means pulling off the front end, much bigger job. If you don't find anything else out of line by pulling the pan, and your governor works, I'd be inclined to not tear the timing gear cover open.

I"ve had the governor disentigrate twice on our TE20. When it"s failed, speed control will be almost non-existent. If you say your engine"s running fine, then perhaps someone"s already fixed it, but didn"t clean out the sump?
Failed governor usually means lumps of zinc, pins etc lying around. Not sure what the ball governor does if it lets go.
I"d pull the timing cover and check to make sure.
Good luck.

If it were mine, I would drain and drop the oil pan to make sure there was not other metal in there and also look to see where the metal came from. Do this before any serious damage is done.
