I'm about ready to start a new restoration project. Am thinking about either a Ferguson (20 or 30) or an 8N. Would appreciate any thoughts about the relative merits/problems. Great forum! Thanks.

I had been looking for a Ford for a few years and had found a couple of them, but, when I told my wife they were built in the 1940's she wasn't so confident on me spending a couple of thousand dollars on them. The TO-30 I have was sitting at the end of a dirt road for two years and I bought it for $1000.00 without knowing if it rand or of I could get parts. I have had no regrets and I am about to get some cracks in the block repaired.

You will find ALL of the parts for a Ford N series are available both new and reproductions for almost all of the sheet metal. On the Fergies you can't get new hoods or sides (doglegs) for the hood or the original C.M. Hall lights. But, ebay is really good and so are the salvageyards.

It's also kinda fun when I show pictures of my tractor to my work coleges and they immidiately say "Oh a Ford", no, I correct them and say a Feruson. Usally the next resonse is Oh, Massey Ferguson, and again I get to correct them about being a Harry Ferguson, the guy who gave Ford the Three point hitch.

Godd luck whichever way you go. These old tractors are a lot of fun.

Tom

Hey Bob-
I'm a FORD man, but I would love a 1947/48 Fergie TO20 to own as well as a 1936 Ferguson/Brown; 1939 9N; 1953 Ford Golden Jubilee; a TO30; and a 1956 Ford 860. several other tractors. Many N's are still in the field working too that's why you see a lot of green and yellow at the shows. I have a 48 8N I restored two years ago that is all original. It ain't no parade queen though as I use it for my working tractor. I have heard that the Continental engines had a block cracking problem. I know the Ferguson story as well as the Ford story and respect both. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Tim

I have worked on many tractors Here and In Ireland, were the Ferguson comes from.I don't like the 8N it has a Flat head engine wich were notorious for warping if they ran a little hot. The fergie has a overhead valve head wich is eaiser to work on and stays flat. The fergie is the orginal.I own a 1952 TO30 and it is dirty because she likes to work.

I have a to20 that is serving me quite well. I AM A MECHANIC. That said, I'd probably do a Ford if I had it to do over again, for the simple fact, the Ford parts people know what an 8n is. The Massey parts people look at me as if I have 2 heads when I say "I've got a Ferguson t020". Both good tractors...good luck, have fun!! Mike

you got that right ! in reply to Mr Chapp, 04-07-2005 18:12:21
So, Sounds like my local Massey dealer isn't the only dealer to treat us lowly TO owners like an inconvenience.

That's too bad that your Massey dealer is too much into the newer stuff and doesn't appreciate these old machines. I have been real lucky to find a Massey Ferguson who deals a lot with the old TO models and has been a great help.

Re: Ferguson or 8N? WOW factor??? in reply to Bob--Texas, 04-06-2005 11:54:37
I prefer Fergies simply because they are somewhat unique, symbolic of an unusual person (Harry Ferguson), have a tiny bit more power (about 5%), are more "rare", and cost a little less... [Neither of the last two reasons are very significant. There are lots of Fergies (hardly "rare") and fewer people that want them. And after the intial purchase, the cost of the parts and restoration are about the same.]

However, if you are looking for the "WOW" factor, consider that properly restored 20's and 30's are but ONE color.... Battleship gray!!! Many people paint them different colors even to imitate a Ford, but personally, I wouldn't call that a restoration... If you want red and white, go Ford.

Jim

Around here, you can usually get a Fergie for less money than a Ford N in similar condition. You can get parts for either tractor. N parts might be a little cheaper because they seem to be more commonly stocked, but you can still get pretty much any Fergie part you might need. Either way, you will end up with a fine tractor.

You see lots of restored N's (show tractors) everywhere you go, don't see as many restored Fergies... they are usually out working in the fields :)
If you have questions on the Fergies... you know where to go. Good luck!
