Hello, Does anyone have an idea how to remove the 2 screws that hold the rear drums on a TO-20? Mine are flathead tapered screws I just cant get them off no matter what I have tried (heat,PB slips) The head is so large the biggest screwdriver I can find is just too small. Secondly I am looking for head studs for the engine. I have had no luck at MF dealers, autoparts stores or nut and bolt warehouses any ideas?

Follow Marty Mn"s advice. First find a flat ended punch about same size as head of screw and give it a good smack with a hammer to loosen it up. Then, near edge (but not on it), knock a dent in screw with centre-punch. When you"ve got a bit of a hollow, angle centre-punch to drive it around. That succeeds in about 95% of cases - otherwise you"re down to drilling hole same dia as thread just until head comes off, and gripping remainder once drum is off with decent grips.

Sears sells (and perhaps others too) a ratchet drive that has multiple bits and you hit it with a hammer and that turns the ratchet. One of the bits is very large and fits fairly well. I have used that on these screws successfully. Also, as another post said, sometimes you can use a chisel and punch one edge of the slot in the screw enough to get it started.

I think Phil may be refering to the impact drivers that are made for this purpose. I have two, one for 1/2 inch sockets and one for 3/8s. I have used the approriate one with a socket/screw
driver blade of the right size and configuration many times. Be sure the ratchet is in the right direction, place the blade in the screw head, hold it firmly together and whack it with a two or three pound hammer. Lots of PD Blaster, WD-40 or other rust-busters is always good and don't be selfish with the amount of impact. HIT IT. Always worked for me. Good luck.

I ended up buying a cheap cold chisel and ground the end down enough to fit into the screw slot very snug, then used an socket on the end of the chisel and drove it out with my 3/8 impact very carefully. Good luck.

I have removed many tapered flat head screws by using a center punch and driving counter clock-wise on the outside edge of the flat. The impact or shock will many times break it loose and start rotation.
do"nt go off the top and drive sideways.

good luck,
Marty

I went out and purchased a very large screw driver that fit the head of the screw. Before attempting to unscrew soak with PB Blaster and with screw driver in the slot tap it with a hammer, this will help break loose. good luck Terry
