Hi Archie, No the transmission was not bad at all, of course it always depends on how it has been treated and a loader if it was fitted will not help matters. Most likely it is the bearings now that have worn and got pitted, they can make a real bad noise if they get like that and it sort of echoes in the gearbox making the sound louder still. Normally the gearboxes are quite good and do not suffer greatly from this problem. I would not think that the gears being rounded off will make any noise, it could make it harder to engage gear though. Check the bearings for visible signs of pitting on the balls if you can see them and turn them to check for noise after cleaning them, if they rattle unusually when you turn them they are a possible source of the noise. You should also check that the gearbox has the correct grade of oil, light oil too will allow extra noise if there is wear, it should be GL1 90 weight oil, no other will do. Also the shafts may be moving back-wards and for-wards and will require re-shimming or the thrust washers replacing to prevent this. Its just wear and tear, nothing unusual, just annoying. A possible reason for the gears being rounded off is that there is some drag on the clutch and the gears "crunch" when they are selected or that the driver was in a hurry to select the gears each time. John
