I guess that leads to another question. Was the tractor acting up before the cup was gone?

With out the cup the inlet air is not as restricted as with it. More Air... lean mixture hotter fire.

It was acting up before and after. Im not really worried about trashing the motor since its gonna get rebuilt this winter anyways ( the usual cracked block it suffers from)

It's possible the distributor is worn to the point the timing changed. Try moving the shaft up and down, if there is much movement it need replaced. A lean gas setting on the carburetor power jet will also cause the engine to run hot. This should be set while the engine is under heavy load per owners manual.

To test the distributor for wear move the shaft side to side as that will alter the points gap, movement up and down is not such a big problem.

Yes it will John. The helix gears mesh at a specific point, and if the gears, or shaft bushings are worn, the shaft will not run in the right position, changing the engine timing. The sideways movement is easy to spot.

Sideways movement is the tricky one and not everyone spots it,(just look back in the archives and see) I agree about the up and down movement but the side movement is the one that causes most trouble and the problem we get here most. You can to some extent take out the wear in the gears by altering the timing but you cant remove the wear in the bearings. You must remember that most of these guys do not have your knowledge about such things and although YOU and I can spot it they are not able to due to lack of experience with the tractor and that is why they come here for help. I got around to messing with the dist this weekend- between all my other projects. Its fine no play or anything unusual. The timing was way off tho - runs a million times better now.
Did find out how light the front end is in 4th gear and giving it gas :D

Now I'm wondering how cracked the block really is from running hot - This winter I'll find out
