First I would like to say that I don’t get upset very easily, if no ones life is being endangered by outright stupidity my heart rate hardly goes up at all.
So I ordered a manifold for my TO-35 through the antique tractor site. I was very pleased when I received it in the fall of 04 as it looked very robust in comparison to the one on the tractor which was cracked and badly in need of replacement.
This spring as the Hay started to look good I removed the old manifold with no problem. I slid the new one onto the studs and …..hmmm there was no way to turn the nuts onto the studs as there is not enough room to slide a wrench over the nut and turn it. The manifold was to thick and there was no way to get a socket in there as you couldn’t get a straight shot at the nuts from the outside due to the thickness of the manifold. Even with a wobble extension and a thin wall socket there was no way. In fact when you start the nut it rubs on the manifold as it turns.
Plan B was to grind down a sacrificial wrench to see if I could get it in there and do the job. Found that I could get the two outer top nuts if I didn’t put on the heat shield, not a good idea. Gave up for the night as the sun went down and the bugs where draining my blood. I was just a tad annoyed.
Plan C was to spend some time looking for a thin wall nut which was a waste of time as none where available.
Plan D was to get eight nuts that where half inch OD and drill and tap them to fit the manifold stud. This actually worked after a fashion and with a combination of sockets and open and box end wrenches I was able to get the manifold tight and keep the heat shield. As far as the torque goes, well they’re on there.
This thing had me about half annoyed before I was done and if I was half annoyed I know that there are those that would have been throwing wrenches. So you can save yourself the trouble. This thing came out of Alpha Tractor Services in Port Hadlock,WA through Woods Equipment Company in Gardner, MA and was ordered on this site. It seems that they should have been able to do better than that.
If any of you have a better solution to this problem than the one I used I would like to hear about it. Thanks
