Hmmmm... might need to convert to 12V

I'm generally a 6V advocate, and proud of my easy starting 6V TO-20.... but might have to re-consider.
I want better light output for a few jobs I usually end-up doing at night. I installed a pair of new TISCO 6V sealed beam headlights, and a 6V rear work light on my TO-20. Wired them up real nice, good grounds. First time I turned them all on, my amp meter plunged to -2 ~ -3, even at higher RPM's. The lights look good though!

I disconnected the rear light so just the headlights were on, my amp meter still drops down to right at 0.

I just now did my math... looks like my headlights pull ~11.6 amps by themselves.

I think the 'ol Delco generator is only good for ~12-14 amps isn't it?

Hmmmm.... If that's the case, I can run 1 headlight all the time, both headlights for short jobs, and turn off my headlights when I run my rear light.... I have always wanted to pull my 12V sprayer behind my TO also. Maybe I can get a 12V PTO mounted alternator so I can install some big 'ol 12V floodlights and run my sprayer at night! Then I could keep my original 6V system! HA HA.... probably not! What's a guy to do?

i had that problem when snow plowing here last winter so i added a second 6 volt battery in parallel with the first and a disconnect device on the Neg post of the second, the regulator worked hard in the beginning but once it balanced out i had no more trouble,i kept the second battery by my clutch side and on a removable cradle with heavy cables in between the two,it may seem like a lot of work but it wasnt
good luck
Danny

Snowplowing at night is my #1 reason for wanting better lights.
Hmmm... 2nd battery... might do the job. Making some sort of extra battery rack gives me a reason to learn how to use my new welder!
thanks Danny

Gshadel, I took my generator and regulator to a starter rebuild shop and had them match the two for better results. The man first increased the output of the generator. The only drawback is if I don't keep the stock headlights on all the time now, the regulator has a shortened life.

I just remembered, you can buy a 12VDC generator and regulator used on the 1968 MF135 tractors, and no-one will know whether you have all original or not unless they open the hood and see the 12V battery.
